{"id":362976,"date":"2025-08-20T13:49:37","date_gmt":"2025-08-20T12:49:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=362976"},"modified":"2025-08-20T13:49:37","modified_gmt":"2025-08-20T12:49:37","slug":"why-i-approved-efcc-request-to-freeze-ex-nnpcl-boss-mele-kyaris-bank-accounts-justice-nwite","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/08\/20\/why-i-approved-efcc-request-to-freeze-ex-nnpcl-boss-mele-kyaris-bank-accounts-justice-nwite\/","title":{"rendered":"Why I approved EFCC request to freeze  ex-NNPCL boss Mele Kyari\u2019s bank accounts \u2013 Justice Nwite"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Following Kyari\u2019s removal, allegations of fraud when he held sway as the helmsman of the state-owned oil company have emerged<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja has disclosed why he acceded to the request of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to freeze the bank accounts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/08\/20\/efcc-places-ex-nnpcl-boss-mele-kyari-on-watchlist-as-court-freezes-accounts\/\">Mele Kyari<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Kyari, a former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, is being investigated by the anti-graft agency over his management of the company.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Nwite granted an ex parte order by the EFCC to freeze Kyari\u2019s account on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Under the order, Kyari\u2019s funds totalling N661,464,601.50 in three Jaiz Bank accounts\u2014registered in his name, the Guwori Community Development Foundation, and the Guwori Community Development Foundation Flood Relief\u2014have been frozen from Tuesday pending investigation.<\/p>\n<p>EFCC\u2019s lawyer, Ogechi Ujam, presented the ex parte order, FHC\/ABJ\/CS\/1641, on the basis that the measure would facilitate the investigation against Kyari.<\/p>\n<p>In his ruling, Justice Nwite stated that he granted the ex parte because the EFCC application has merit.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cI have listened to counsel to the applicant and gone through the affidavit evidence with the exhibits and written address attached in support.
