{"id":38557,"date":"2021-05-27T05:21:02","date_gmt":"2021-05-27T04:21:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=38557"},"modified":"2021-05-27T05:21:56","modified_gmt":"2021-05-27T04:21:56","slug":"do-not-ban-social-media-but-regulate-it-sultan-of-sokoto-tells-fg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/27\/do-not-ban-social-media-but-regulate-it-sultan-of-sokoto-tells-fg\/","title":{"rendered":"Do not ban social media but regulate it, Sultan of Sokoto tells FG"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa&#8217;ad Abubakar has asked the federal government to regulate the usage of social media in the country.<\/p>\n<p>There have been concerns over alleged moves by the federal government to restrict the use of social media, especially with the sponsoring of a bill in the senate entitled \u2018Protection from Internet Falsehood and Manipulation 2019\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The bill, which has received varied reactions across social media with many Nigerians calling for it to be scrapped, has passed second reading at the senate.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that the minister of information, culture and tourism, Lai Mohammed had however stated that\u00a0the federal government will \u201cregulate\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/21\/excessive-use-of-social-media-kills-destiny-bishop-oyedepo\/\">social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Sultan of Sokoto while speaking on the proposed regulation said he is against placing a total ban on social media but asked the government to take a cue from countries that have successfully regulated it.<\/p>\n<p>He spoke on Wednesday at the special summit on security in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs lawmakers, what do you do about social media? I\u2019m not saying ban social media but regulate it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve seen it happen all over the world. Why can\u2019t Nigeria borrow from that? It\u2019s important for us and I hope this seminar will discuss some of these issues and when you\u2019re ready with your decision, call some of us back, like the national council of traditional rulers. We will sit together once more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the security situation in the country, he called for an end to ethnic and religious profiling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s high time we put aside ethnic and religious profiling. Stop profiling criminals. Call them by their names.
