{"id":40839,"date":"2021-06-01T13:22:38","date_gmt":"2021-06-01T12:22:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=40839"},"modified":"2021-06-01T13:22:38","modified_gmt":"2021-06-01T12:22:38","slug":"president-buhari-to-senate-confirm-farouk-yahaya-as-army-chief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/06\/01\/president-buhari-to-senate-confirm-farouk-yahaya-as-army-chief\/","title":{"rendered":"President Buhari to Senate: Confirm Farouk Yahaya as army chief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nigeria&#8217;s President Muhammadu Buhari has called on the senate to confirm the appointment of Farouk Yahaya as the chief of army staff.<\/p>\n<p>Barely 24 hours after <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/21\/breaking-nigeria-army-chief-general-ibrahim-attahiru-dies-in-air-crash\/\">Ibrahim Attahiru<\/a><\/strong> died in a military plane crash alongside 10 other officers, a major-general, Yahaya replaced him.<\/p>\n<p>WITHIN NIGERIA assembled that Attahiru who died at 54, was the shortest-serving army chief in Nigeria\u2019s history, having only replaced Tukur Buratai in January.<\/p>\n<p>Following Attahiru\u2019s demise, the president\u00a0appointed Yahaya\u00a0as the new army chief.<\/p>\n<p>The president\u2019s request for confirmation was in a letter read by Senate President Ahmad Lawan on the floor of the upper legislative chamber on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Buhari premised his request on section 18 (1) of the Armed Forces Act.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPursuant to section 18 (1) of the Armed Forces act CAP A 20 laws of the federation of Nigeria 2004, I hereby forward for confirmation by the senate the appointment of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/28\/farouk-yahaya-resumes-as-new-coas\/\">Farouk Yahaya<\/a> <\/strong>as the chief of army staff of the armed forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,\u201d the commander-in-chief said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe CV is herewith attached. It is my hope that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/20\/senate-seeks-upgrade-of-fed-poly-offa-to-degree-awarding-institution\/\">senate<\/a> will consider and confirm the nominee in the usual expeditious manner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yahaya was the former general officer commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army.<\/p>\n<p>Before his appointment, he was the theatre commander of the counter-terrorism military outfit in the north-east which is code-named Operation Hadin Kai.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nigeria&#8217;s President Muhammadu Buhari has called on the senate to confirm the appointment of Farouk Yahaya as the chief of army staff.
