{"id":41450,"date":"2021-06-02T19:33:29","date_gmt":"2021-06-02T18:33:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=41450"},"modified":"2021-06-02T19:34:04","modified_gmt":"2021-06-02T18:34:04","slug":"how-kogi-chief-judge-magistrates-chairman-arranged-kangaroo-trial-for-buhari-must-go-protesters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/06\/02\/how-kogi-chief-judge-magistrates-chairman-arranged-kangaroo-trial-for-buhari-must-go-protesters\/","title":{"rendered":"How Kogi Chief Judge, Magistrate arranged Kangaroo trial for Buhari-Must-Go Protesters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Kogi State Acting Chief Judge, Justice Richard Olorunfemi, and the Chairman of the Kogi State branch of the Magistrates Association of Nigeria, Dr Tanko Muhammed reportedly arranged a kangaroo trial for two Buhari-Must- Go protesters, Larry Emmanuel and Victor Udoka.<\/p>\n<p>According to SaharaReporters, Olorunfemi and Muhammed were the tools the state Deputy Governor, Edward Onoja, used to keep the two protesters in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/27\/350k-alleged-fraud-us-court-orders-indefinite-detention-of-gov-abioduns-suspended-aide-bidemi-rufai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">detention<\/a> since April 5.<\/p>\n<p>It was gathered that despite the ongoing strike by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, Emmanuel and Udoka secretly arraigned and remanded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Dr Muhammed was the one who issued the illegal remand order that was given while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/10\/pay-funds-directly-to-state-judiciaries-jusun-implores-fg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JUSUN<\/a> was on strike; contrary to what the acting Chief Judge told the media, he was the one who asked Tanko to issue the remand order.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOlorunfemi gave him the assignment. This was after Onoja informed him to arrange the Magistrate to jail the anti-Buhari protesters. The Commissioner of Police was also part of the conspiracy,\u201d a source revealed.<\/p>\n<p>The two protesters were said to have also been denied medical treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are seriously ill and not getting treatment. The state government is hell bent on keeping them, perhaps until they die in custody?\u201d a source had stated.<\/p>\n<p>A month ago, global human rights&#8217; organisation, Amnesty International, had demanded the unconditional release of the two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/06\/video-two-men-beaten-for-staging-buhari-must-go-protest-in-kogi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Buhari-must-go protesters<\/a>, adding that the protesters&#8217; only crime was that they were \u201cpeacefully protesting against corruption and distributing posters that were perceived to be critical of the President.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty International said that the activists \u201cwere physically assaulted and tortured by unidentified men while peacefully protesting against corruption, and the poor human rights situation in Nigeria, and distributing posters that were perceived to be critical of the President.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA few days later, they were turned over to the police and were subsequently transferred to the Nigeria Correctional Centre, located in Kogi State, in north central Nigeria, where they are currently being held.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe two activists are being detained solely for peacefully exercising their right to protest and expressing their views. They must be immediately and unconditionally released,\u201d AI statement partly read on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The online publication had reported on April 8, that the Kogi State Police Command continued in its deliberate harassment and intimidation of Emmanuel and Udoka by charging them for treasonable felony and public disturbance.<\/p>\n<p>It was learnt that the duo were not brought to court because of the JUSUN strike, but were tried in a Magistrate\u2019s office and remanded in the Kabba prison.<\/p>\n<p>It was further gathered that the magistrate gave no adjourned date for the matter.<\/p>\n<p>The police had secretly arraigned the two protesters and ensured that they were remanded at the Kabba Prison \u2013 without the knowledge of their lawyers or family members.<\/p>\n<p>It was also learnt that neither the charges on which they were arraigned were made to the public or the Magistrate where they were tried.<\/p>\n<p>The police authorities backed by the Kogi State government have continued in their desperate attempts to frustrate the two protesters.<\/p>\n<p>This is sequel to the torture meted out to the protesters who were only pasting Buhari-Must-Go posters in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital.<\/p>\n<p>SaharaReporters had reported that the irate mob flogged the two youths, filmed them and brutalised them before they were later handed over to the police.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Kogi State Acting Chief Judge, Justice Richard Olorunfemi, and the Chairman of the Kogi State branch of the Magistrates Association of Nigeria, Dr Tanko Muhammed reportedly arranged a kangaroo trial for two Buhari-Must- Go protesters, Larry Emmanuel and Victor Udoka.
