{"id":42749,"date":"2021-06-05T12:50:28","date_gmt":"2021-06-05T11:50:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=42749"},"modified":"2021-06-05T12:50:28","modified_gmt":"2021-06-05T11:50:28","slug":"twitter-creates-jobs-for-youths-makinde-urges-fg-to-reverse-suspension","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/06\/05\/twitter-creates-jobs-for-youths-makinde-urges-fg-to-reverse-suspension\/","title":{"rendered":"Twitter creates jobs for youths, Makinde urges FG to reverse suspension"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has urged the Federal Government to reverse its suspension of microblogging site, Twitter, noting that the platform has become a money-making one for Nigerian youths who make a living through content creating and sharing on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>He made this known in a statement on Saturday titled, \u2018Statement by Governor Seyi Makinde Regarding the Suspension of Twitter\u2019s Operations in Nigeria by the Federal Government\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>WITHIN NIGERIA had earlier reported that Twitter deleted a \u2018civil war\u2019 post by Buhari, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, announced the suspension of Twitter, citing the \u201cpersistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria\u2019s corporate existence\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Mobile network operators also said they received a directive from the Nigerian Communications Commission to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/06\/05\/breaking-twitter-nigeria-is-down\/\"><strong>block access to Twitter in the country<\/strong><\/a> following the suspension by the government.<\/p>\n<p>Reacting in a statement, Makinde said, \u201cAs leaders, we should go beyond emotional reactions to issues and think about how our actions will affect the people we lead and our international ratings socially and economically.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwitter has become the platform for young people and indeed all Nigerians to exercise their fundamental right to express and publish an opinion. They use the platform to complain, argue and give feedback to government and its agencies who in turn, use these to improve policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a fundamental point that should be kept in mind as we debate the necessity of this suspension.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should also remember that Twitter has gone beyond a source of communication for many of our hardworking youths in Nigeria. It has become a source of livelihood for many, irrespective of their political affiliations or religious leanings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNigerian youths and digital communications organisations earn a living from being able to use the platform to post communications on behalf of their clients. Others who may not have physical stores also rely on Twitter to give visibility to their products and services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurthermore, I believe the Federal Government should be actively interested in how certain policies and action will affect investor confidence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI, therefore, use this medium to appeal to the Federal Government to reverse this suspension for the greater good of Nigerians.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has urged the Federal Government to reverse its suspension of microblogging site, Twitter, noting that the platform has become a money-making one for Nigerian youths who make a living through content creating and sharing on the platform.
