{"id":43848,"date":"2021-06-08T07:50:32","date_gmt":"2021-06-08T06:50:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=43848"},"modified":"2021-06-08T07:50:32","modified_gmt":"2021-06-08T06:50:32","slug":"un-general-assembly-elects-foreign-minister-of-maldives-as-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/06\/08\/un-general-assembly-elects-foreign-minister-of-maldives-as-president\/","title":{"rendered":"UN General Assembly elects foreign minister of Maldives as President"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The UN General Assembly, on Monday voted to elect the Foreign Minister of the Maldives, Abdallah Shahid, as President of the 76th session.<\/p>\n<p>In what was a contested election, featuring former Afghan Foreign Minister, Zalmai Rassoul, Shahid garnered 143 votes while Rassoul got 48 votes.<\/p>\n<p>On May 6, President of the UN General Assembly, Volkan Bozkir had convened informal interactive dialogues in the General Assembly Hall \u2013 as mandated by resolution 71\/323 \u2013 in which the candidates responded to the questions submitted earlier by civil society and other representatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wholeheartedly congratulate Honourable Abdulla Shahid on his election as the next President of the UN General Assembly,\u201d said the incumbent President, reminding that the President-elect had been \u201ca strong voice\u201d for the small island developing states.<\/p>\n<p>The outgoing President also recognised \u201cthe strong candidacy\u201d of Zalmai Rassoul, saying that his extensive experience in multilateral diplomacy and comprehensive vision had earned the respect of member states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this important time in his country\u2019s history, the international community\u2019s support for Afghanistan\u2019s long journey toward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/04\/nba-to-governors-close-of-courts-humiliates-nigerias-democracy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">democracy<\/a> is as essential as ever,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, welcomed the election of Abdulla Shahid, Foreign Minister of the Maldives, as President-elect of the 76th session of the General Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Guterres said Shahid\u2019s longstanding diplomatic experience, including in his current role as Minister of Foreign Affairs had given him a deep understanding of the importance of multilateralism in addressing today\u2019s global challenges.<\/p>\n<p>The UN chief commended the President-elect for his \u201cselection of hope as the central theme in his vision statement\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that coming from a small island developing state, Shahid would bring unique insights to the assembly as the world prepares for the UN climate conference, COP26, in Glasgow in November.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also want to express my deep appreciation to His Excellency Dr. Zalmai Rassoul and thank him for contributing to this dynamic process,\u201d the UN chief said.<\/p>\n<p>The top UN official also expressed his \u201cdeep appreciation\u201d to Bozkir for his \u201cexceptional leadership\u201d as Assembly President during the 75th anniversary session.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs our most representative organ, the General Assembly is the foundation of all our work at the UN, and essential to our effectiveness as an organisation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2021, the world needs that effectiveness more than ever,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The UN chief added that millions of people were mourning the losses of loved ones to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in a crisis that has \u201cdealt a body blow to communities, societies, and economies\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil everyone, everywhere has access to vaccines, it continues to pose an enormous threat,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n<p>The 76th Assembly will \u201cgrapple with the impact of the pandemic across the three pillars of our work: peace, sustainable development, and human rights,\u201d said Guterres, wishing Shahid\u202f\u201cevery success in his task\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The UN chief assured the President-elect of his support and that of the entire Secretariat in reaching shared goals and upholding universal values.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UN General Assembly, on Monday voted to elect the Foreign Minister of the Maldives, Abdallah Shahid, as President of the 76th session.
