{"id":46441,"date":"2021-06-14T12:16:54","date_gmt":"2021-06-14T11:16:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=46441"},"modified":"2021-06-14T12:16:54","modified_gmt":"2021-06-14T11:16:54","slug":"birmingham-hospital-worker-uses-dead-patient-debit-card-to-buy-snacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/06\/14\/birmingham-hospital-worker-uses-dead-patient-debit-card-to-buy-snacks\/","title":{"rendered":"Birmingham hospital worker uses dead patient debit card to buy snacks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Barely few minutes after the death of a 83 years old woman, a Birmingham Heartlands hospital worker in the UK has confessed to using the dead patient\u2019s debit card to buy snacks from the vending machine.<\/p>\n<p>The transactions are reported to have occurred 17 minutes after the victim died.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0health care worker, Ayesha Basharat, 23, appeared in Birmingham court, Wednesday on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/06\/03\/fbi-arrests-another-nigerian-for-allegedly-stealing-800000-in-payroll-hack\/\">charges<\/a> of having stolen the dead 83-year-old woman\u2019s card at Heartlands Hospital in the city, ITV reported.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors had recorded the woman\u2019s time of death as 1:56 p.m. on Jan. 24 \u2014 but just 17 minutes later purchases were made on her card at the vending machine, police said.<\/p>\n<p>Basharat allegedly made six \u00a31 purchases using the contactless payment option and then made one more later in the evening.<\/p>\n<p>She then tried again four days later, but by that time the card had already been canceled.<\/p>\n<p>Police arrested Basharat during her shift and found the card still in her possession.<\/p>\n<p>She initially claimed that she found the card on the floor and got it confused with her own, but authorities said the cards were different colors.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-46443\" src=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/06\/chioma_adebiyi\/2021\/06\/14\/w-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"634\" height=\"357\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/06\/chioma_adebiyi\/2021\/06\/14\/w-2.jpeg 634w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/06\/chioma_adebiyi\/2021\/06\/14\/w-2-300x169.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 634px) 100vw, 634px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Basharat on Wednesday pleaded guilty to charges of theft and fraud by false representation. The health assistant was sentenced to two, five-month jail terms to run concurrently, suspended for 18 months.<\/p>\n<p>Investigating officer DC Andrew Snowdon, from West Midlands Police CID, said: \u2018This was an abhorrent breach of trust and distressing for the victim\u2019s family.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018They were having to come to terms with the death of a loved one from COVID when they found the bank card missing \u2013 and then of course the realisation that the card was taken by someone who should have been caring for her.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Our Hospital Liaison Officer worked closely with Heartlands security team to gather evidence in this case.
