{"id":47893,"date":"2021-06-17T20:20:43","date_gmt":"2021-06-17T19:20:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=47893"},"modified":"2021-06-17T20:33:22","modified_gmt":"2021-06-17T19:33:22","slug":"efcc-has-recovered-over-100m-for-npa-says-bawa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/06\/17\/efcc-has-recovered-over-100m-for-npa-says-bawa\/","title":{"rendered":"EFCC has recovered over $100m for NPA, says Bawa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa has stated that the agency has recovered over $100 million for the Nigerian Ports Authority.<\/p>\n<p>According to the EFCC chairman, the recovery was part of the outstanding remittances owed to the country through the Nigerian Ports Authority.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that the federal government in 2017 had terminated the boat pilotage agreement it signed with Intels, after Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation (AGF), said it violated the constitution.<\/p>\n<p>The company was also\u00a0accused of not paying taxes\u00a0in 2017 \u2014 the same year NPA accused it of\u00a0failing to remit\u00a0an outstanding debt.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the weekly ministerial briefing organised by the presidential media team at the presidential villa, Abuja, on Thursday, Bawa said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/06\/17\/dont-reassign-mainas-case-to-another-judge-efcc-tells-fhc-chief-judge\/\">EFCC<\/a> had made recoveries directly for the federal government and indirectly to other victims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust a couple of weeks back, we recovered $100 million for the Nigeria Ports Authority but the monies were paid into the account of NPA but through our efforts,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAm I not going to record that we have recovered such an amount for NPA? Are you going to see it in the EFCC recovered account with the CBN? No. There are recoveries that are made directly into the EFCC account.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is through systems and processes, there is a department of asset forfeiture and recovery management department in EFCC responsible for collating all the data regarding recovered assets, assets on interest forfeiture and assets on final forfeiture as well as their location and of course their management.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bawa said there is a department of asset forfeiture and recovery management in EFCC responsible for collating all the data regarding recovered assets, assets on interest forfeiture and assets on final forfeiture as well as their location and management.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the time I took over, we have recovered over N6 billion, over $161 million, over \u00a313,000, \u20ac1,730, 200 Canadian dollars, CFA 373,000, \u00a58,430,\u201d he added.\u201cWe have recovered 30 real East\u2019s, one carpet, 13 electronics, one farm land, one factory, two motorcycles, one filling station and about 32 automobiles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On a minister who laundered $37 million through real estate, the EFCC chairman said he was\u00a0making reference to Alison-Madueke, former petroleum minister.<\/p>\n<p>The anti-graft agency had filed charges of money laundering against Alison-Madueke who left the country for the UK shortly before the inception of President Muhammadu Buhari\u2019s administration.<\/p>\n<p>Ibrahim Magu, former EFCC chairman, had said Alison-Madueke\u00a0stole \u201cnot less than $2.5 billion\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0had secured the final forfeiture of over $80 million worth of properties owned by the former minister.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa has stated that the agency has recovered over $100 million for the Nigerian Ports Authority.
