{"id":48127,"date":"2021-06-18T10:34:58","date_gmt":"2021-06-18T09:34:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=48127"},"modified":"2021-06-18T10:34:58","modified_gmt":"2021-06-18T09:34:58","slug":"breaking-court-clears-senator-nwaoboshi-of-n322m-fraud-charge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/06\/18\/breaking-court-clears-senator-nwaoboshi-of-n322m-fraud-charge\/","title":{"rendered":"BREAKING: Court clears Senator Nwaoboshi of N322m fraud charge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Federal High Court in Lagos has discharged Senator Peter Nwaoboshi of the N322million money laundering charge filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).<\/p>\n<p>Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke held that the agency failed to prove the elements of the offences for which it charged the lawmaker.<\/p>\n<p>Nwaoboshi, a Peoples\u2019 Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, represents Delta North in the upper chamber.<\/p>\n<p>The judge also discharged Nwaoboshi\u2019s two firms \u2013 Golden Touch Construction Project Ltd and Suiming Electrical Ltd \u2013 on the same ground.<\/p>\n<p>The defendants were arraigned in 2018 before Justice Mohammed Idris who was later elevated to the Court of Appeal. They were then re-arraigned before Justice Aneke on October 5, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>In the two-count charge marked FHC\/L\/117C\/18., the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/06\/17\/efcc-recovers-n6bn-30-estates-32-automobiles-in-3-months\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EFCC<\/a> alleged that the defendants committed the offence between May and June 2014, in Lagos.<\/p>\n<p>Nwaoboshi was said to have acquired a property described as Guinea House, Marine Road, in Apapa Lagos, for the sum of N805million.<\/p>\n<p>The prosecution said he reasonably ought to have known that N322million out of the purchase sum formed part of proceeds of an unlawful act.<\/p>\n<p>The sum was said to have been transferred to the vendors by order of Suiming Electrical Ltd.<\/p>\n<p>Suiming Electrical was alleged to have on May 14, 2014, aided Nwaoboshi and Golden Touch to commit money laundering.<\/p>\n<p>But Justice Aneke held, among others, that the prosecution\u2019s case collapsed because \u201cbank officials were not called to testify.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>More to come&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Federal High Court in Lagos has discharged Senator Peter Nwaoboshi of the N322million money laundering charge filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
