46-year-old Liberian rebel commander, Alieu Kosiah, has been sentenced in Switzerland to 20 years in jail for rape, killings and an act of cannibalism.<\/p>\n

Kosiah’s conviction was one of the first ever over the West African country\u2019s civil war<\/a> and the case was also Switzerland\u2019s first war crimes trial in a civilian court.<\/p>\n

The rebel commander went by the nom de guerre \u201cbluff boy\u201d in the rebel faction ULIMO that fought former President Charles Taylor\u2019s army in the 1990s.<\/p>\n

He faced 25 counts including one where he was accused of eating slices of a man\u2019s heart.<\/p>\n

He was convicted of that and all but four of the other counts, documents from the Swiss Federal Court showed.<\/p>\n

Kosiah was arrested in 2014 in Switzerland, where he had been living as a permanent resident.<\/p>\n

A 2011 Swiss law allows prosecution for serious crimes committed anywhere, under the principle of universal jurisdiction.<\/p>\n

Reuter reported that a plaintiff in the case who testified that Kosiah ordered his brother\u2019s murder<\/a>, urged other Liberians to come forward as witnesses and secure more convictions.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you set an example, the other guys will be afraid,\u201d he said in a statement via the NGO Civitas Maxima that represented him. He asked not to be named in media reports for fear of reprisals.<\/p>\n

Liberia has ignored pressure to prosecute crimes from its back-to-back wars between 1989-2003, in which thousands of child soldiers became bound up in power tussles exacerbated by ethnic rivalry.<\/p>\n

Human Rights Watch called Friday\u2019s sentencing a \u201clandmark\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cSwitzerland\u2019s efforts on this case should help mobilize wider accountability in Liberia as this shows that these crimes can be prosecuted. I see this as an opportunity,\u201d the group\u2019s Elise Keppler said.<\/p>\n

Activists in the Liberian capital Monrovia celebrated the verdict. \u201cThis will serve as a deterrent for others around the world. I think justice has taken its course,\u201d said Dan Sayeh, a civil society campaigner.<\/p>\n

Kosiah had denied all the charges and told the court he was a minor when first recruited into the conflict.<\/p>\n

His lawyer Dmitri Gianoli said in an email to Reuters that Kosiah was \u201cvery disappointed\u201d by the court\u2019s decision, saying it had succumbed to media and political pressure.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Alieu Kosiah will pursue his fight for justice to be served.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kosiah was cleared on Friday of attempted murder of a civilian, accessory to the murder of a civilian, an order to loot and recruitment of a child soldier.<\/p>\n

The court said that the 20-year sentence was the maximum it was allowed to give under Swiss law.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo mitigating circumstances were taken into account in the sentencing. A deportation from Switzerland was also ordered for a period of 15 years,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n

Kosiah was also ordered to pay compensation to seven plaintiffs, it added.<\/p>\n

A court spokesman later clarified that he would not be expelled before his sentence was served.<\/p>\n

The roughly 6-1\/2 years that Kosiah has already served in pre-trial detention will count towards the sentence, the court papers showed.<\/p>\n

Charles Taylor was sentenced for war crimes in 2012, but only for acts in neighbouring Sierra Leone.<\/p>\n

His son, Chuckie, was sentenced for torture in Liberia by a U.S. court in 2009.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
