{"id":49115,"date":"2021-06-21T08:45:40","date_gmt":"2021-06-21T07:45:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=49115"},"modified":"2021-06-21T09:41:35","modified_gmt":"2021-06-21T08:41:35","slug":"ecowas-shifts-launch-of-single-currency-to-2027","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/06\/21\/ecowas-shifts-launch-of-single-currency-to-2027\/","title":{"rendered":"ECOWAS shifts launch of single currency to 2027"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new road map to launch &#8220;Eco&#8221;, its proposed single currency in 2027 has been adopted by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).<\/p>\n<p>This was made known by the president of the ECOWAS Commission while speaking with journalists on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, president of the ECOWAS Commission, said the heads of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/06\/20\/take-realistic-decisions-that-will-positively-impact-citizens-buhari-tells-ecowas-leaders\/\">ECOWAS<\/a> member states agreed with the new road map at the 59th ordinary session in Accra, Ghana.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDue to the shock of the pandemic, the heads of state had decided to suspend the implementation of the convergence pact in 2020-2021, Brou said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a new road map and a new convergence pact that will cover the period between 2022-2026, and 2027 being the launch of the Eco.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recall that the 15-member regional group had agreed to launch Eco in January 2020 at its 55th ordinary session in July 2019.<\/p>\n<p>While eight, mostly francophone countries \u2014 Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau (Portuguese-speaking), Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo \u2014 announced in December 2019 that they would be changing from the CFA Franc to Eco, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Liberia and Gambia, who are all English-speaking, as well as Guinea, a francophone country,\u00a0rejected the adoption of Eco.<\/p>\n<p>President Muhammadu Buhari-led government had called for\u00a0the extension of the take-off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNigeria\u2019s position on the Eco currency is that the convergence criteria have not been met by majority of the countries,\u201d the federal government had said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has to be an extension of time on the take-off of the single currency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria, the largest economy in West Africa, operates a managed float currency, while other states have their currencies pegged to the euro.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new road map to launch &#8220;Eco&#8221;, its proposed single currency in 2027 has been adopted by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
