{"id":50326,"date":"2021-06-24T06:06:42","date_gmt":"2021-06-24T05:06:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=50326"},"modified":"2021-06-24T06:06:42","modified_gmt":"2021-06-24T05:06:42","slug":"driver-remanded-for-allegedly-killing-lastma-officer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/06\/24\/driver-remanded-for-allegedly-killing-lastma-officer\/","title":{"rendered":"Driver remanded for allegedly killing LASTMA officer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja on Wednesday has remanded a commercial bus driver, Elijah Shokoya for allegedly killing an officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/03\/18\/driver-hacks-lastma-officer-to-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LASTMA officer<\/a>, Olawale Akinmade, died on Wednesday, January 27, 2021, after he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/06\/18\/nigerian-man-arrested-in-ghana-after-he-allegedly-knocked-down-woman-with-car-dumped-body-in-bush\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">knocked down<\/a> by a blue and black Opel space bus with number plate AAA 74 GG, which was driven by Shokoya.<\/p>\n<p>Akinmade was knocked down at Demurin Street junction inwards Mile 12, while controlling traffic, and suffered injuries to his head and body.<\/p>\n<p>The offence is said to violate Section 224 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, and is punishable under Section 229 of the same law.<\/p>\n<p>Shokoya, who was arraigned on one count of involuntary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/21\/derek-chauvin-convicted-of-murder-manslaughter-in-george-floyds-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">manslaughter<\/a> before Justice Oyindamola Ogala, pleaded not guilty to the charge.<\/p>\n<p>Following his plea, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Olayinka Adeyemi, asked the court for a trial date and requested that the defendant be remanded in a correctional facility.<\/p>\n<p>The defence counsel from the African Women Lawyers Association, Abiodun Kolawale, prayed the court for a short adjournment to present Shokoya\u2019s bail application.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Ogala ordered Shokoya\u2019s remand in a correctional centre and adjourned the matter till July 14 for trial.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja on Wednesday has remanded a commercial bus driver, Elijah Shokoya for allegedly killing an officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency.
