{"id":52594,"date":"2021-06-30T05:21:01","date_gmt":"2021-06-30T04:21:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=52594"},"modified":"2021-06-30T09:09:04","modified_gmt":"2021-06-30T08:09:04","slug":"six-nigerians-and-a-malaysian-woman-arrested-for-love-scams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/06\/30\/six-nigerians-and-a-malaysian-woman-arrested-for-love-scams\/","title":{"rendered":"Six Nigerians and a Malaysian woman arrested for love scams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Six Nigerian men and a Malaysian woman believed to be members of a syndicate involved in love scams have been arrested by the police.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysian Police arrested the suspects aged between 33 and 42 during two raids around Kajang in Kuala Lumpur.<\/p>\n<p>Federal Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Comm Datuk Mohd Kamarudin Md Din, said the syndicate was also linked to at least eight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/06\/24\/romance-scams-kenyan-woman-nigerian-man-face-30-year-jail-in-u-s-for-defrauding-victims-of-over-4million\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">love scam<\/a> cases, involving losses estimated at RM3.7 million.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-52596 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/06\/kunlenet07\/2021\/06\/30\/love-scamers.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"557\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/06\/kunlenet07\/2021\/06\/30\/love-scamers.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/06\/kunlenet07\/2021\/06\/30\/love-scamers-300x232.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The investigation also found that the syndicate members entered the country using student and social visa. When their visas expired, they continued to live here illegally to continue with their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/06\/29\/how-suspected-kidnappers-disguise-as-bishop-naval-officer-to-defraud-pastor-enenche\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fraud<\/a> activities.&#8221; he said in a statement on Sunday, June 27.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We also seized eight laptops, 17 mobile phones, three thumb drives, two modems, two routers, two ATM cards, two Nigerian passports and as an assortment of documents,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Comm Mohd Kamarudin said the syndicate operated in two separate groups, with one creating fake accounts on social media while the other looked for mule accounts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-52597 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/06\/kunlenet07\/2021\/06\/30\/love-scamers-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"558\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/06\/kunlenet07\/2021\/06\/30\/love-scamers-2.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/06\/kunlenet07\/2021\/06\/30\/love-scamers-2-300x233.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The syndicate then worked with locals, who would pose as Customs officers or employees of courier companies, to dupe their victims.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kamarudin advised the public to always be wary of requests for friendship or love on social media, especially those who promised gifts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-52595 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/06\/kunlenet07\/2021\/06\/30\/Malaysian-police.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/06\/kunlenet07\/2021\/06\/30\/Malaysian-police.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/06\/kunlenet07\/2021\/06\/30\/Malaysian-police-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We urge the public to exercise caution when befriending people online, especially those who promise gifts as a sign of affection.
