{"id":52774,"date":"2021-06-30T12:59:24","date_gmt":"2021-06-30T11:59:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=52774"},"modified":"2021-06-30T12:59:24","modified_gmt":"2021-06-30T11:59:24","slug":"monthly-subsidy-on-electricity-now-n30bn-fg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/06\/30\/monthly-subsidy-on-electricity-now-n30bn-fg\/","title":{"rendered":"Monthly subsidy on electricity now N30bn &#8211; FG"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The federal government has disclosed that the cost of subsidising electricity every month is now about N30 billion &#8211; a drop of N20 billion (40 percent) from N50 billion spent in February this year.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of power, Sale Mamman said\u00a0the funds were provided to augment the shortfall by the distribution companies (DisCos) who have failed to pay for the electricity supply wheeled to them.<\/p>\n<p>He also said following a minor increase in the tariff regime, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/01\/sylva-speaks-on-petrol-subsidy-says-fg-will-halt-it-soon\/\">subsidy<\/a> has now decreased by half, but still constitutes a serious drain on the nation\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p>According to a document on the progress and overview of Nigeria\u2019s power sector by the ministry, the reduction (N20 billion) was achieved as a result of improvements in the collection of power tariffs by distribution companies (Discos), which has increased by about 60 percent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTariffs rose by 36 per cent from September 2020. Collections have grown by 60 per cent plus,\u201d the document read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernment subsidy has been reduced by N20bn per month. Record collections of N65bn hit in December 2020 cycle (from an average of N39bn).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The World Bank, in its recent\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/documents1.worldbank.org\/curated\/en\/389281623682704986\/pdf\/Resilience-through-Reforms.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nigeria development update report<\/a><\/strong>, said regressive and opaque subsidies for fuel and electricity create economic distortions and reduce the fiscal space for development spending.<\/p>\n<p>The bank further said reducing both fuel and electricity subsidies are necessary to generate the fiscal space needed to continue supporting the COVID-19 response.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The federal government has disclosed that the cost of subsidising electricity every month is now about N30 billion &#8211; a drop of N20 billion (40 percent) from N50 billion spent in February this year.
