{"id":54803,"date":"2021-07-05T18:49:15","date_gmt":"2021-07-05T17:49:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=54803"},"modified":"2021-07-05T18:49:15","modified_gmt":"2021-07-05T17:49:15","slug":"fg-spends-n60bn-annually-to-repair-vandalised-pipelines-lai-mohammed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/07\/05\/fg-spends-n60bn-annually-to-repair-vandalised-pipelines-lai-mohammed\/","title":{"rendered":"FG spends N60bn annually to repair vandalised pipelines &#8211; Lai Mohammed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Minister of information and culture, Lai Mohammed has disclosed that the federal government spends N60 billion annually to repair vandalised pipelines.<\/p>\n<p>This disclosure was made on Monday by the information minister at a town hall meeting on the protection of oil and gas infrastructure in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The minister said with oil and gas providing 80 percent of Nigeria\u2019s budgetary revenues and 95 percent of foreign exchange earnings, the impact of pipeline <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/28\/nnpc-pipeline-vandalism-increased-by-50-in-february\/\">vandalism<\/a> on the economy could only be imagined.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s town hall meeting on protecting oil and gas infrastructure is very important, considering that the destruction of this infrastructure has socioeconomic and environmental implications,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith oil providing 80 percent of Nigeria\u2019s budgetary revenues and 95 percent of foreign exchange earnings, one can only imagine the impact of the incessant destruction of oil pipelines on the economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not intend to take the wind out of the sail of the experts who will speak on this issue, but with an average of 200,000 barrels per day lost to the wanton damage to pipelines and a huge amount of 60 billion naira yearly to repair and maintain the vandalised points, one can only imagine the impact on the economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mohammed said between January 2019 and September 2020, 1,161 pipeline points across the country were attacked by vandals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApart from the impact on the nation\u2019s earnings, consider also the environmental problems caused by the incessant vandalism, in terms of freshwater pollution, air pollution, soil pollution, etc., and you will appreciate the enormity of the problem,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith far less resources, the administration has recorded more infrastructural development than was achieved in all the 16 years of the previous administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs this government strives to bridge our nation\u2019s infrastructural deficit, we must do everything in our power to stop the wanton destruction of public infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Minister of information and culture, Lai Mohammed has disclosed that the federal government spends N60 billion annually to repair vandalised pipelines.
