{"id":56081,"date":"2021-07-08T20:34:18","date_gmt":"2021-07-08T19:34:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=56081"},"modified":"2021-07-08T20:35:41","modified_gmt":"2021-07-08T19:35:41","slug":"we-will-prove-our-tax-compliance-multichoice-reacts-to-firss-move-to-collect-n1-8trn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/07\/08\/we-will-prove-our-tax-compliance-multichoice-reacts-to-firss-move-to-collect-n1-8trn\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;We will prove our tax compliance&#8217; &#8211; MultiChoice reacts to FIRS&#8217;s move to collect N1.8trn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MultiChoice Nigeria has reacted to moves by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to collect N1.8trn from the group through banks.<\/p>\n<p>The group disclosed that it has not received any notification from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) over alleged tax evasion.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that on Thursday morning, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/07\/08\/firs-accuses-multichoice-of-n1-8trn-tax-fraud-moves-to-freeze-bank-accounts\/\">FIRS announced the appointment of some commerical banks as agents to <\/a><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">recover N1.8 trillion from accounts of MultiChoice Nigeria Limited (MCN) and MultiChoice Africa (MCA).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Muhammad Nami, FIRS chairman, said the decision to appoint the banks as agents and freeze the accounts was due to the group\u2019s continued refusal to grant FIRS access to its servers for audit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This was contained in a statement released by the DStv Multichoice media coordinator, Bamidele Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>According to Johnson,\u00a0the company would comply with the tax laws of Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/02\/02\/just-in-multichoice-slashes-price-on-dstv-gotv-decoders\/\">MultiChoice<\/a> Nigeria has not received any notification from FIRS. MultiChoice Nigeria respects and is comfortable that it complies with the tax laws of Nigeria,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been and are currently in discussion with FIRS regarding their concerns and believe that we will be able to resolve the matter amicably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Multichoice is the owner of the satellite televisions, DStv and Gotv \u2013 popular subscription-based platforms in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>In May, FIRS had threatened to commence deduction of taxes directly from the bank accounts of defaulters.<\/p>\n<p>The agency said it became necessary as companies, corporations, ministries, departments, agencies (MDAs), and other collection agents illegally withhold taxes.<\/p>\n<p>It said it had served notices to all concerned companies, corporate entities, and other collection agents.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MultiChoice Nigeria has reacted to moves by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to collect N1.8trn from the group through banks.
