{"id":56082,"date":"2021-07-08T20:14:01","date_gmt":"2021-07-08T19:14:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=56082"},"modified":"2021-07-08T20:14:01","modified_gmt":"2021-07-08T19:14:01","slug":"benfica-president-arrested-in-portugal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/07\/08\/benfica-president-arrested-in-portugal\/","title":{"rendered":"Benfica president arrested in Portugal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Luis Filipe Vieira, the president of Portuguese football club Benfica, has been arrested on charges of tax fraud and money laundering.<\/p>\n<p>According to Portugal\u2019s Central Department of Investigation and Criminal Action, \u201cbusinesses and financing in a total amount exceeding 100 million euros (118 million U.S. dollars), which may have caused considerable damage to the State\u201d are being investigated.<\/p>\n<p>The Portuguese Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office added that \u201ccrimes of breach of trust, qualified fraud, forgery, tax fraud and [money] laundering are investigated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Police investigators say that \u201caround 45 search warrants were carried out, covering corporate premises, homes, lawyers\u2019 offices and a banking institution\u201d in the capital Lisbon, and the cities of Torres Vedras and Braga, in northern Portugal.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Luis Filipe Vieira\u2019s arrest on Wednesday, his son Tiago Vieira, football manager Jose Antonio dos Santos and sports agent Bruno Macedo were also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/07\/08\/man-arrested-for-impersonating-assistant-police-commissioner-in-kano\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrested<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They have been placed under investigation by the Portuguese Tax and Customs Authority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe investigation is under the responsibility of the Tax and Customs Authority (AT) and has the close collaboration of the Public Security Police (PSP),\u201d read a statement from the Central Department of Investigation and Criminal Action.<\/p>\n<p>According to a police statement, \u201cthe arrests made took into account the evidence already collected, in order to safeguard the evidence, avoid the absence of defendants and prevent the consummation of suspicious actions in progress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Portuguese police confirm that the detainees will remain in detention until a \u201cjudicial interrogation\u201d is carried out due to the \u201cgravity of the crimes and the precautionary requirements\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Luis Filipe Vieira, the president of Portuguese football club Benfica, has been arrested on charges of tax fraud and money laundering.
