{"id":56784,"date":"2021-07-10T16:35:38","date_gmt":"2021-07-10T15:35:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=56784"},"modified":"2021-07-10T16:35:38","modified_gmt":"2021-07-10T15:35:38","slug":"nigeria-to-benefit-as-unicef-signs-agreement-to-deliver-220m-covid-vaccines-in-africa-on-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/07\/10\/nigeria-to-benefit-as-unicef-signs-agreement-to-deliver-220m-covid-vaccines-in-africa-on-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria to benefit as UNICEF signs agreement to deliver 220m COVID vaccines in Africa  On it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The United Nations Children\u2019s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has stated that it will deliver 220 million\u202fdoses of COVID vaccine to all\u202f 55 member states of the African Union (AU) by the end of 2022.<\/p>\n<p>This was contained in a statement released on Thursday by the agency.<\/p>\n<p>It was announced that it has signed an agreement with Janssen Pharmaceutica NV to supply up to\u202f220 million\u202fdoses of the Johnson &amp; Johnson (J&amp;J) single-dose vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>It aims to deliver about 35 million doses by the end of 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe agreement between UNICEF and Janssen Pharmaceutica NV will help implement the Advance Purchase Commitment (APC) signed between the African Vaccine Acquisition Trust (AVAT) and Janssen in March of this year. That agreement secured\u202fan option to order another 180 million doses, bringing the maximum access up to a total of 400 million doses by the end of 2022,\u201d the statement reads.<\/p>\n<p>The statement revealed that UNICEF will procure and deliver <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/07\/08\/nigeria-absent-as-world-bank-approves-4bn-for-covid-vaccine-rollouts-in-51-countries\/\">COVID vaccines<\/a> on behalf of the AVAT initiative. Other partners include the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and the World Bank.<\/p>\n<p>Henrietta Fore, UNICEF executive director, said: \u201cAfrican countries must have affordable and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines as soon as possible. Vaccine access has been unequal and unfair, with less than 1 per cent of the population of the African continent currently vaccinated against COVID-19.
