He offered his resignation on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe directors of \u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/07\/08\/benfica-president-arrested-in-portugal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Benfica<\/a> appeal for [fans] to unite around their common objectives and the safeguarding of the higher interests of the club,\u201d Benfica said on their website.<\/p>\n<p>A week ago, Vieira was taken into custody for his involvement of more than 100 million euros of deals in football.<\/p>\n<p>He was subsequently placed under house arrest.<\/p>\n<p>Former Portugal midfielder Rui Costa, sporting director with Benfica since 2008, has taken on Vieira\u2019s presidential role on an interim basis.<\/p>\n<p>Vieira denies wrong-doing.<\/p>\n<p>It is expected that he will soon be released from house arrest against bail.<\/p>\n<p>A court ruled on July 10 that Vieira would be released after paying a \u20ac3m bail within 20 days.<\/p>\n<p>He was also ordered to hand over his passport.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The President of Portuguese giants Benfica, Luis Filipe Vieira, has resigned.
