{"id":60641,"date":"2021-07-20T17:01:41","date_gmt":"2021-07-20T16:01:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=60641"},"modified":"2021-07-20T17:01:41","modified_gmt":"2021-07-20T16:01:41","slug":"ncdc-records-59-suspected-monkeypox-cases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/07\/20\/ncdc-records-59-suspected-monkeypox-cases\/","title":{"rendered":"NCDC records 59 suspected monkeypox cases"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has disclosed that 59 suspected and 15 confirmed cases of monkeypox have been recorded in the country.<\/p>\n<p>This was disclosed on Tuesday by the director-gener of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/07\/10\/ncdc-records-1786-suspected-cholera-cases-in-7-days\/\">NCDC<\/a>, Chikwe Ihekweazu in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that the Dallas County Health and phad on July 16 reported a case of monkeypox in a resident who recently returned from Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>According to the DCHHS, the individual, whose name was withheld, is a resident of Dallas, Texas who travelled from Nigeria, and arrived at Love Field airport on July 9.<\/p>\n<p>Ihekweazu said an outbreak would be declared when there is a large cluster of monkeypox cases.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cThe federal government was notified of the situation in Texas, through the International Health Regulations (IHR), who reported a case of monkeypox disease diagnosed in a patient who had recently visited Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince the re-emergence of monkeypox in the country in September 2017, the agency has continued to receive reports and responses to sporadic cases of the disease from states across the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been working closely with state health ministries to strengthen monkeypox disease surveillance and response in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe work with enhanced monkeypox surveillance project where we have been training health workers across states to rapidly detect and manage cases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur initial focus is on the states with the highest number of cases \u2013 Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers and Lagos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will continue working with all states to strengthen monkeypox prevention, detection and control in Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ihekweazu advised Nigerians that \u201cif you feel ill or have a sudden rash, please visit a hospital for diagnosis and management\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Monkeypox is caused by a virus closely related to that which causes smallpox and cowpox, although not as deadly as smallpox.<\/p>\n<p>It is spread via large respiratory droplets from someone showing symptoms of the disease, and can also be transmitted by direct contact with bodily fluids or lesion material.
