{"id":63505,"date":"2021-07-28T13:37:22","date_gmt":"2021-07-28T12:37:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=63505"},"modified":"2021-07-28T13:37:22","modified_gmt":"2021-07-28T12:37:22","slug":"naira-falls-to-n522-1-at-parallel-market-over-banning-of-forex-sale-to-bdcs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/07\/28\/naira-falls-to-n522-1-at-parallel-market-over-banning-of-forex-sale-to-bdcs\/","title":{"rendered":"Naira falls to N522\/$1 at parallel market over banning of forex sale to BDCs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following the discontinuation of sale of foreign exchange (FX) to Bureaux De Change (BDCs) operators in the country by the Central Bank of Nigeria, the naira has dropped to N522 to a dollar at the parallel market.<\/p>\n<p>According to data on <strong><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/abokifx.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abokiFX.com,<\/a> <\/strong>a website that collates parallel rates in Lagos, the local currency which opened today&#8217;s trading at\u00a0<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">N505\/$1, lost N17 or about 3.4 percent in midday trading.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">At the importer &amp; exporter (I&amp;E) window, it traded moderately to close at N411.50 per dollar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Governor of CBN, Godwin Emefiele on Tuesday announced the discontinuation of forex sales to BDCs.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The CBN governor said BDC operators have become agents of money laundering in Nigeria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/07\/27\/breaking-cbn-stops-sale-of-forex-to-bdcs\/\">CBN<\/a> would channel weekly allocations of dollar sales to commercial banks to meet legitimate FX demands and mandated banks to sell forex to every customer who meets requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But a top insider at CBN disclosed that the apex bank may be unable to meet requests of banks to serve<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0all customers as mandated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The source added that the apex bank allocates about $20,000 weekly to each BDC operator in the country \u2013 amounting to $5.72 billion yearly to the parallel market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cCommercial banks come with bids of $1.3 billion fortnightly, and CBN cannot provide more than $250 million,\u201d the source had said.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Following the discontinuation of sale of foreign exchange (FX) to Bureaux De Change (BDCs) operators in the country by the Central Bank of Nigeria, the naira has dropped to N522 to a dollar at the parallel market.
