{"id":67097,"date":"2021-08-05T18:21:49","date_gmt":"2021-08-05T17:21:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=67097"},"modified":"2021-08-05T18:21:49","modified_gmt":"2021-08-05T17:21:49","slug":"breach-of-contract-puma-to-sue-afn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/05\/breach-of-contract-puma-to-sue-afn\/","title":{"rendered":"Breach of contract: Puma to sue AFN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The technical director of the factional Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) board, Sunday Adeleye has stated that Puma, the German sportswear company will sue the body to court for alleged breach of contract.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that the sportswear company on Wednesday terminated the 4-year kits\u00a0sponsorship contract with the federation, citing the failure of Nigerian athletes to wear the brand at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>Adeleye while speaking on Arise TV on Thursday said\u00a0Puma has been \u201csending <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/05\/documents-expose-how-ex-vice-president-atiku-used-wife-to-launder-40million-to-us\/\">documents<\/a> from their legal department\u201d adding that the company \u201cwill go to court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe contract is a non-disclosure one. It is between PUMA and AFN with FMYSD\u2019s permission. We warned that this may lead to litigation and wrote to all parties involved, including finance and justice ministries,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are sure that PUMA will go to court on this matter. Their officials have called that they are sending documents from their legal department. We wrote the minister on the implications for Nigeria. This won\u2019t make other companies deal with Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"caps\">The contract was signed on July 24, 2019, in Doha by the AFN board under Ibrahim Gusau.<\/p>\n<p>It was expected to expire in 2022 and has been the genesis of a major crisis\u00a0that the athletics body is battling to date.<\/p>\n<p>A significant section of the deal stated that Puma will supply kits to all age categories of the Nigerian athletics team for four years.<\/p>\n<p>However, the contract has led to an ongoing legal battle between the sports ministry and the factional board of AFN.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, the ministry failed to allow the Nigerian athletics team to don the Puma branded apparel at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics, arguing that it\u2019s \u201ca subject of a criminal investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The technical director of the factional Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) board, Sunday Adeleye has stated that Puma, the German sportswear company will sue the body to court for alleged breach of contract.
