{"id":67222,"date":"2021-08-06T03:39:18","date_gmt":"2021-08-06T02:39:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=67222"},"modified":"2021-08-06T03:39:18","modified_gmt":"2021-08-06T02:39:18","slug":"two-bankers-convicted-for-stealing-from-a-dead-customers-account","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/06\/two-bankers-convicted-for-stealing-from-a-dead-customers-account\/","title":{"rendered":"Two bankers convicted for stealing from a dead customer&#8217;s account"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Justice Edem Ita Kufre of the Cross River State High Court, Calabar has convicted two bank officials, Daniel Akpan Eno and Mbuk Idongesit for conspiracy and theft of funds in the account of a deceased customer of a commercial bank.<\/p>\n<p>The two bankers were convicted on Wednesday, August 4, 2021 after pleading guilty to separate one-count charge bordering on criminal conspiracy and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/07\/23\/fbi-declares-6-nigerians-most-wanted-for-cyber-crime-photos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fraudulent transfers<\/a>. A third defendant, and alleged accomplice, Victor John Okon pleaded \u201cnot guilty\u201d. His trial was adjourned till August 10, 2021 for consideration of bail application.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Kufre convicted and sentenced Akpan to three months imprisonment with an option of fine of Fifty Thousand Naira (N50, 000.00), while Idongesit was sentenced to three months imprisonment with an option of Thirty Thousand Naira (N30, 000.00) fine.<\/p>\n<p>The convicts\u2019 journey to prison started on May 23, 2021 when Idongesit (alongside one Utibe George- currently at large) approached Akpan with the burial programme of one Godfried Godwin Osso, a deceased customer of the Bank, whom George(at large) claimed was his step &#8211; father, with a plot to steal from the deceased\u2019s account.<\/p>\n<p>On May 24, 2021, George concluded the deal with the convicts and also contacted a Teller (Victor Okon \u2013 the 3rd defendant) from another branch of the bank to ease access to the funds in the account of the deceased. A 50% sharing formula was agreed upon by the conspirators and the plot was executed.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-67223 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/08\/kunlenet07\/2021\/08\/06\/Daniel-Akpan-Eno-and-Mbuk-Idongesit.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/08\/kunlenet07\/2021\/08\/06\/Daniel-Akpan-Eno-and-Mbuk-Idongesit.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/08\/kunlenet07\/2021\/08\/06\/Daniel-Akpan-Eno-and-Mbuk-Idongesit-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/08\/kunlenet07\/2021\/08\/06\/Daniel-Akpan-Eno-and-Mbuk-Idongesit-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Economic and Financial Crimes commission, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/04\/efcc-arraigns-bdc-operator-for-alleged-n197m-fraud-in-kano\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EFCC<\/a>, waded in following a petition from the bank, alleging suspicious dissipation of monies in the deceased account into the accounts of family members and acquaintances, from where they were diverted to personal use.<\/p>\n<p>Investigation revealed that on June 19, 2019 Victor Okon connived with George Ifiok Utibe (at large) and received the sum of One Million Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N1, 500, 000.00). Daniel Akpan also benefited the sum of One Million and Forty Thousand Naira (N1, 040, 000.00) while Godwin Mbuk benefited the sum of One Hundred and Thirty Thousand Naira (N130, 000.00) only<\/p>\n<p>The judge ordered the convicts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/07\/08\/two-men-remanded-over-social-media-publication-linking-abdulsalami-with-bandits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">remanded<\/a> at the Nigerian Correctional facility until they pay their fines, while Victor was remanded at the Commission\u2019s detention facility pending the hearing of his bail application.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Justice Edem Ita Kufre of the Cross River State High Court, Calabar has convicted two bank officials, Daniel Akpan Eno and Mbuk Idongesit for conspiracy and theft of funds in the account of a deceased customer of a commercial bank.
