{"id":69927,"date":"2021-08-12T07:19:44","date_gmt":"2021-08-12T06:19:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=69927"},"modified":"2021-08-12T07:19:44","modified_gmt":"2021-08-12T06:19:44","slug":"covid-who-approves-three-new-drugs-for-clinical-trials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/12\/covid-who-approves-three-new-drugs-for-clinical-trials\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID: WHO approves three new drugs for clinical trials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Wednesday disclosed that three new candidate drugs are being tested in the new phase of its global solidarity clinical trials, to find effective treatments against COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>The drugs \u2014 artesunate, imatinib and infliximab \u2014 will be tested on hospitalised COVID-19\u00a0patients in 52 countries under the Solidarity PLUS programme.<\/p>\n<p>Solidarity PLUS is the largest global collaboration among WHO\u2019s 194 member states, with thousands of researchers in over 600 hospitals as participants.<\/p>\n<p>Over 203 million cases of the disease have been recorded globally since late 2019 when it was first reported in China.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a media briefing in Geneva on Wednesday, Tedros Ghebreyesus, WHO director-general, said there is a critical need to find more effective and accessible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/11\/fcta-receives-15-million-covid-19-intervention-funds\/\">COVID-19<\/a> therapeutics.<\/p>\n<p>Four drugs were evaluated under the initial solidarity trial in 2020, which showed that remdesivir, hydroxychloroquine, lopinavir and interferon had little or no effect on hospitalised patients with COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe already have many tools to prevent, test for and treat COVID-19, including oxygen, dexamethasone and IL-6 blockers,\u201d Ghebreyesus said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we need more for patients at all ends of the clinical spectrum, from mild to severe disease. And we need health workers that are trained to use them in a safe environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinding more effective and accessible therapeutics for COVID-19 patients remains a critical need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The three drugs were selected by an independent panel for their potential in reducing the risk of death in people hospitalised for COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>They are already being used to treat other conditions \u2014 artesunate for malaria, imatinib is used for certain cancers, including leukemia, while infliximab is used to treat Crohn\u2019s Disease, rheumatoid arthritis and other diseases of the immune system.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Wednesday disclosed that three new candidate drugs are being tested in the new phase of its global solidarity clinical trials, to find effective treatments against COVID-19.
