{"id":69937,"date":"2021-08-12T08:04:05","date_gmt":"2021-08-12T07:04:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=69937"},"modified":"2021-08-12T08:04:05","modified_gmt":"2021-08-12T07:04:05","slug":"us-calls-on-opec-to-increase-production-to-crash-oil-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/12\/us-calls-on-opec-to-increase-production-to-crash-oil-prices\/","title":{"rendered":"US calls on OPEC+ to increase production to crash oil prices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The United States has asked the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies known as OPEC+ to increase oil production to tackle rising gasoline prices.<\/p>\n<p>This was stated on Wednesday by the national security advisor, Jake Sullivan.<\/p>\n<p>According to Sullivan,<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the country is in talks with \u201crelevant\u201d OPEC+ members on the \u201cimportance of competitive markets in setting prices.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Brent crude stood at $70 per barrel, down by 0.82 percent, with West Texas Intermediate at $67.74 per barrel.<\/p>\n<p>OPEC+ last month agreed to increase oil production\u00a0<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">by 400,000 barrels per day every month from August to December \u2014 putting an additional 2 million barrels per day of crude into the market over the remainder of 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But Sullivan said that the increase is not enough to bolster the oil market amid economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWhile OPEC+ recently agreed to production increases, these increases will not fully offset previous production cuts that OPEC+ imposed during the pandemic until well into 2022. At a critical moment in the global recovery, this is simply not enough,\u201d the statement reads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sullivan lamented that higher costs of gasoline <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/07\/nscdc-impounds-two-trucks-with-adulterated-ago-petroleum-products-arrests-five-suspects-in-akwa-ibom\/\">(petrol)<\/a> if left unchecked, risk harming the ongoing global recovery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He added that the price of crude oil has been higher than it was at the end of 2019 \u2013 pre-COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cPresident Biden has made clear that he wants Americans to have access to affordable and reliable energy, including at the pump. Although we are not a party to OPEC, the United States will always speak to international partners regarding issues of significance that affect our national economic and security affairs, in public and private,\u201d the statement further reads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe are engaging with relevant OPEC+ members on the importance of competitive markets in setting prices. Competitive energy markets will ensure reliable and stable energy supplies, and OPEC+ must do more to support the recovery.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Meanwhile, the White House also sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), asking the agency to scrutinise the oil industry for any illegal conduct that may contribute to an increase in gas prices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cDuring this summer driving season, there have been divergences between oil prices and the cost of gasoline at the pump,\u201d Brian Deese, director of the National Economic Council, wrote in a letter to the FTC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWhile many factors can affect gas prices, the president wants to ensure that consumers are not paying more for gas because of anti-competitive or other illegal practices.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Reese called on the FTC to \u201cconsider using all of its available tools to monitor the U.S. gasoline market and address any illegal conduct that might be contributing to price increases for consumers at the pump, address any illegal conduct.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The United States has asked the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies known as OPEC+ to increase oil production to tackle rising gasoline prices.
