{"id":70357,"date":"2021-08-13T06:46:49","date_gmt":"2021-08-13T05:46:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=70357"},"modified":"2021-08-13T06:46:49","modified_gmt":"2021-08-13T05:46:49","slug":"halilu-akilu-ibb-laid-solid-infrastructural-development-for-nigeria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/13\/halilu-akilu-ibb-laid-solid-infrastructural-development-for-nigeria\/","title":{"rendered":"Halilu Akilu: IBB laid solid infrastructural development for Nigeria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A retired army general, Halilu Akilu has stated that Ibrahim Babangida, a former head of state gave the country solid infrastructural development during his regime.<\/p>\n<p>Halilu Akilu who retired as brigadier-general served as\u00a0director of the National Intelligence Agency (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Intelligence_Agency_(Nigeria)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>NIA<\/strong><\/a>) during the regime of Babangida.<\/p>\n<p>Babangida served as head of state between 1985 and 1993.<\/p>\n<p>Akilu while speaking on Thursday at the &#8216;IBB Legacy Dialogue&#8217; held in Abuja said\u00a0infrastructural development recorded during Babangida\u2019s regime include the military barracks in Abuja, the national assembly complex, and the state house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIBB laid solid infrastructural development for the nation during his regime. We have that of bringing the federal capital of the country back to Abuja. This was a great decision that only leaders of IBB\u2019s capacity can do,\u201d NAN quoted him as saying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe second is the building of military barracks in Abuja, the building of the national assembly complex, the Aso Rock villa (state house), the federal secretariat, as well as economic and social empowerment of Nigerians, especially women, with the establishment of the \u2018Better Life for Rural Women\u2019 as MAMSER [Mass Mobilisation for Self Reliance, Social Justice, and Economic Recovery].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Akilu also commented on the trial of Mamman Vatsa, a major-general and friend to IBB \u2014 Vatsa was executed in 1986 during the Babangida regime, over alleged treason.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the trial that led to the execution, Akilu said IBB\u2019s loyalty to his friends and family didn\u2019t conform with the narrative about the role of then head of state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you know general <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/06\/mko-abiola-why-i-annulled-june-12-election-babangida\/\">Babangida<\/a>, you will understand that these narratives did not fit the picture. As the leader then, IBB had to follow the right process of the military trials of any act of treason and there are persons bestowed with that responsibility,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>On his part, Abdulsalami Abubakar, a former head of state, commended Babangida for his \u201cloyalty to Nigeria\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBabangida is patient, dedicated and loyal to Nigeria and his friends. He is the most affectionate to family, friends, colleagues as well as subordinates,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis event to mark his 80th birthday by his children shows that a legacy had been laid from the home.
