{"id":70937,"date":"2021-08-14T09:53:07","date_gmt":"2021-08-14T08:53:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=70937"},"modified":"2021-08-14T09:53:07","modified_gmt":"2021-08-14T08:53:07","slug":"new-lambda-covid-19-variant-may-be-resistant-to-vaccines-study-reveals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/14\/new-lambda-covid-19-variant-may-be-resistant-to-vaccines-study-reveals\/","title":{"rendered":"New Lambda COVID-19 variant may be resistant to vaccines, Study reveals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new study has revealed that the Lambda variant, a new strain of COVID-19 may be resistant to vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>The variant, Lambda has been<span class=\"s1\">\u00a0highlighted by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a variant of interest compared to the Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta strains, which have all risen to \u201cvariant of concern\u201d status.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The strain has been contained in 26 countries, including substantial outbreaks in Chile where it has been blamed for more than a third of the country\u2019s infections, as well as Argentina and Ecuador.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biorxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2021.07.28.454085v1.full\"><strong>study<\/strong><\/a>, researchers said though the Lambda variant was reported to have been first detected in Peru in December 2020, \u201cin-depth analysis\u201d revealed that the variant was first detected in Argentina on November 8, 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"51\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">They said the surge in infections in Chile despite a high <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/07\/21\/zimbabwe-orders-mandatory-covid-19-vaccination-for-all-its-civil-servants\/\">vaccination<\/a> rate suggests that the variant may be immune to vaccines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The researchers, however, added that the study has not been peer reviewed, and it is therefore not conclusive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cNotably, the vaccination rate in Chile is relatively high; the percentage of the people who received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine was 60%,\u201d the study said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cNevertheless, a big COVID-19 surge has occurred in Chile in Spring 2021, suggesting that the Lambda variant is proficient in escaping from the antiviral immunity elicited by vaccination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIn addition to increasing viral infectivity, the Delta variant exhibits higher resistance to the vaccine-induced neutralization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cSimilarly, here we showed that the Lambda variant equips not only increased infectivity but also resistance against antiviral immunity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Scientists in Chile had\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2021.06.28.21259673v1.full\">warned in a recent study<\/a><\/strong> that the Lambda variant appears to evade vaccines better than other strains.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new study has revealed that the Lambda variant, a new strain of COVID-19 may be resistant to vaccines.
