{"id":71730,"date":"2021-08-16T11:58:31","date_gmt":"2021-08-16T10:58:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=71730"},"modified":"2021-08-16T11:58:31","modified_gmt":"2021-08-16T10:58:31","slug":"ive-accepted-death-british-student-stuck-in-afghanistan-on-holiday-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/16\/ive-accepted-death-british-student-stuck-in-afghanistan-on-holiday-says\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;I&#8217;ve accepted death&#8217; &#8211; British student stuck in Afghanistan on holiday says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/15\/us-troops-to-finally-leave-afghanistan-20-years-after-world-trade-center-bombing-biden-reveals\/\">Afghanistan falls to the Taliban<\/a><\/strong>, a British national stuck in a UN safehouse in the country says he has accepted his fate and that he feels \u2018abandoned\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>21 years old man named, Miles Routlege, from Birmingham says he visited the country because he thought it&#8217;ll be safe to visit because the country would not fall to the Taliban for several months.<\/p>\n<p>However, on Sunday, August 15, Taliban troops rolled into the capital, seizing power as<br \/>\npresident Ashraf Ghani ran for his life.<\/p>\n<p>Miles, whose ambition is to visit some of the world\u2019s most dangerous places, claims he was stopped by insurgents near Kabul international airport who asked him where he was from.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-71732\" src=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/08\/chioma_adebiyi\/2021\/08\/16\/611a34b3e22f1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/08\/chioma_adebiyi\/2021\/08\/16\/611a34b3e22f1.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/08\/chioma_adebiyi\/2021\/08\/16\/611a34b3e22f1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/08\/chioma_adebiyi\/2021\/08\/16\/611a34b3e22f1-86x64.jpg 86w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>He said he told them \u2018Wales\u2019 because he didn\u2019t want to say the UK and they didn\u2019t know where that was so let him go.<\/p>\n<p>Miles, a student at Loughborough University, said he had called the British embassy but feels ignored.<\/p>\n<p>He said to The Times: \u2018I was fully prepared for death, I accepted it. This trip has been a test of God. I\u2019m very religious so I believe I\u2019ll be looked after.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Before I left I wrote a letter to my friends saying that if I died, not to feel guilty, that I would die happy and religious and proud.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He also hopes his American Express card, which gives his names as \u2018Lord Miles Routledge\u2019, might help keep him safe.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u2018The Taliban may see that as reason enough to keep me alive, thinking it may hold some negotiating power as they\u2019ll think I\u2019m important.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Before the Taliban took over, he shared pictures of himself in a local market with guns.<\/p>\n<p>Miles, told The Times he decided to take the trip after spending the summer working as an intern for a wealth management firm.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-71733\" src=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/08\/chioma_adebiyi\/2021\/08\/16\/611a3477864e2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"454\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/08\/chioma_adebiyi\/2021\/08\/16\/611a3477864e2.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/08\/chioma_adebiyi\/2021\/08\/16\/611a3477864e2-300x284.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>He also shared photos of his plane ticket to Kabul to prove to doubters he was really in the country.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u2018I like risk, I\u2019m a banker, so it makes sense. I hate lying around on a beach so I wanted to do something a little bit different.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018After graduating I\u2019ll have a full-time job and maybe a family so won\u2019t have the opportunity to do things like this again.
