{"id":71895,"date":"2021-08-16T19:35:06","date_gmt":"2021-08-16T18:35:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=71895"},"modified":"2021-08-16T21:06:57","modified_gmt":"2021-08-16T20:06:57","slug":"ibb-defends-june-12-annulment-says-he-did-the-right-thing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/16\/ibb-defends-june-12-annulment-says-he-did-the-right-thing\/","title":{"rendered":"Again, IBB defends June 12 annulment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former military head of state, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) has stated that he did the right thing by annulling the June 12 general election.<\/p>\n<p>Babangida insisted that he took the action in &#8220;interest of the country&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that Babangida in early August disclosed that\u00a0if he had not annulled the election, a coup d\u2019etat would have occurred.<\/p>\n<p>This disclosure made by the former military head of state stirred criticism from some\u00a0Nigerians, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/07\/afenifere-reacts-to-ibbs-excuse-for-annulling-june-12-election\/\">Afenifere<\/a>, the Yoruba socio-cultural group.<\/p>\n<p>Secretary-general of Afenifere, Sola Ebiseni had stated that\u00a0the former head of state was \u201cinsulting the intelligence of Nigerians\u201d with the explanation he gave for his action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBabangida has not said a new thing worthy of any reaction in respect of his treasonable acts of the annulment of the adjudged freest and fairest election in the country\u2019s political history,\u201d he had said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNigerians are not interested in any excuse being given by IBB. It is even most preposterous that IBB will only now be insulting the intelligence of Nigerians that he annulled their mandate to forestall a violent coup, which, by reasonable inference, he was aware of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, speaking in an interview on Channels Television on Monday, Babangida said his action at the time was appropriate, and subsequent coups lent credence to his decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a decision we took. I had to take that decision. I did that to the best of my knowledge, in the interest of the country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did the right thing. I can sit back and say some of the things I said manifested after I had left.
