{"id":73365,"date":"2021-08-20T06:57:34","date_gmt":"2021-08-20T05:57:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=73365"},"modified":"2021-08-20T07:37:40","modified_gmt":"2021-08-20T06:37:40","slug":"report-fraudulent-election-financing-and-forex-malpractices-efcc-tells-banks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/20\/report-fraudulent-election-financing-and-forex-malpractices-efcc-tells-banks\/","title":{"rendered":"Report fraudulent election financing and forex malpractices, EFCC tells banks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa has called on banks to collaborate with the agency in tackling fraudulent election financing and foreign exchange malpractices.<\/p>\n<p>This was stated by the EFCC chairman, Bawa Abdulrasheed during<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0an interactive session with managing directors of banks, on Thursday, in Lagos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The anti-corruption agency in March had ordered bank employees to declare their assets &#8211; as part of efforrs to\u00a0check the role of bankers in keeping funds acquired illegitimately.<\/p>\n<p>Bawa while speaking at the interactive session said<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the anti-graft agency is working in line with the United Nations\u2019 categorisation of the fight against corruption vis-\u00e0-vis prevention, enforcement and assets recovery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He added that it is important to bring the financial institutions up to speed with the evolving policies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAt the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/19\/efcc-arrests-14-suspected-internet-fraudsters-in-enugu\/\">EFCC<\/a>, we want to place more emphasis on prevention. We want to lay less emphasis on enforcement, which is investigation and prosecution and put our energy more on prevention and asset recovery,\u201d Bawa said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIn addition, some of the issues we have identified include foreign exchange malpractices and fraudulent election financing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAs you all know, in 16 to 18 months, Nigeria will be preparing for another round of elections, and the government will not want what happened in the past to repeat itself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The EFCC boss said that it had become necessary to put bankers on their toes, particularly as the 2023 general elections approached.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He declared that the \u201cnew EFCC\u201d under his leadership believes that financial institutions had an important role in the commission\u2019s efforts to rid Nigeria of economic and financial crimes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He also urged the bankers to comply with the guidelines of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on the issuance of personal travel allowance (PTA) and business travel allowance (BTA) to their customers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cYou need to ensure full compliance with regard to knowing your customers and ensuring that you do not give opportunities for foreign exchange malpractices,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bawa disagreed with the allegation of a cat-and-mouse relationship between the EFCC and financial institutions in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cMoving forward, come September 1, anything that we see that is happening or has happened within your industry, we are going to deal with it by the books,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe commission will ensure that any banker complicit in any such financial fraud will face the full wrath of the law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIt is better to have fewer banks complying with the laws of the land than to have multiple banks not complying with the laws, \u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In his remarks, Kennedy Uzoka, group chief executive officer of United Bank for Africa (UBA), described the engagement as \u201ca very unique gathering\u201d, adding that \u201cthe new leadership of the EFCC is seeing things from a new prism\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ebenezer Onyeagwu, managing director of Zenith Bank Plc, also pledged support for the EFCC\u2019s war against corruption.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa has called on banks to collaborate with the agency in tackling fraudulent election financing and foreign exchange malpractices.
