{"id":73403,"date":"2021-08-20T08:31:56","date_gmt":"2021-08-20T07:31:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=73403"},"modified":"2021-08-20T08:31:56","modified_gmt":"2021-08-20T07:31:56","slug":"kaduna-records-1665-cholera-cases-in-five-months","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/20\/kaduna-records-1665-cholera-cases-in-five-months\/","title":{"rendered":"Kaduna records 1,665 cholera cases in five months"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Government of Kaduna state has disclosed that 1,665 cases of cholera between April and August.<\/p>\n<p>This was disclosed on Thursday by the state commissioner for health, Amina Mohammed-Baloni during a press briefing.<\/p>\n<p>According to the commissioner,\u00a0the cases were recorded in 19 of the 23 LGAs in the state.<\/p>\n<p>She identified the affected LGAs as Soba, Makarfi, Giwa,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Chikun\/@10.4210525,6.6715967,9z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x104d2e5cc42b31ad:0x61a9ccb8d086ff1d!8m2!3d10.2703859!4d7.179026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Chikun<\/strong><\/a>, Sabon Gari, Zaria, Kaduna North, Kachia, Jaba, Kubau, Lere, Sanga, Birnin-Gwari, Kaduna South, Kadan, Igabi and Kajuru .<\/p>\n<p>The commissioner attributed the outbreak to poor hygiene and sanitation.<\/p>\n<p>She said the state has been monitoring the situation and is currently recording less active cases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn April this year we were informed of cases of vomiting and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/01\/cholera-cases-exceed-1000-as-death-toll-rises-to-69-in-fct\/\">diarrhea<\/a> in some local government areas where we sent our response teams and took samples for testing and it returned positive for cholera,\u201d Mohammed-Baloni said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince then, we have been monitoring them . We treated 842 and discharged them while we still have 14 active cases now on treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mohammed-Baloni said there are secondary health facilities in the LGAs for management of the disease and added that the ministry has distributed drugs for management and chlorine for purification of water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that cholera is seasonal and occurs mostly during rainy seasons, I urge residents to avoid building latrines close to their wells and observe good hygiene and sanitation,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) last week said more than 30,000 suspected cases of cholera have been\u00a0reported in 22 states and the federal capital territory (FCT).<\/p>\n<p>Chikwe Ihekweazu, director-general of the NCDC, said more than 800 deaths were also recorded in the last seven months.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Government of Kaduna state has disclosed that 1,665 cases of cholera between April and August.
