{"id":75543,"date":"2021-08-26T18:54:54","date_gmt":"2021-08-26T17:54:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=75543"},"modified":"2021-08-26T18:54:54","modified_gmt":"2021-08-26T17:54:54","slug":"fg-moves-to-shut-channels-tv-orders-arrest-of-journalists-over-ortoms-anti-govt-interview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/26\/fg-moves-to-shut-channels-tv-orders-arrest-of-journalists-over-ortoms-anti-govt-interview\/","title":{"rendered":"FG Moves To Shut Channels TV, Orders Arrest Of Journalists Over Ortom\u2019s \u2018Anti-Govt\u2019 Interview"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The allegations made by Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State and Commodore Kunle Olawunmi (retd.) have resulted to an intended ban of Channels TV by President Muhammadu Buhari Government and arrest of the station&#8217;s journalists.<\/p>\n<p>In the interview,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/26\/nbc-reportedly-queries-channels-tv-over-interview-with-ortom\/\">Governor Ortom<\/a> made an allegation of a fulanization agenda and Olawunmi alleged that there are people who are in top positions in Buhari Government that are sponsors of Boko Haram.<\/p>\n<p id=\"advads-2044904648\" class=\"advads-content amp-wp-dc7f686\" data-amp-original-style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;\">According to SaharaReporters, through the National Broadcasting Commission, the Buhari government is set to wield the \u2018big stick\u2019 against the television station.<\/p>\n<p data-amp-original-style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;\">&#8220;<strong>Buhari attacks Section 39(1) of the constitution \u2013 the government plans to shut Channels TV and arrest pressmen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"advads-content amp-wp-dc7f686\" data-amp-original-style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;\"><strong>&#8220;In a dangerous regression to Decree Number 4, the Buhari Government, using NBC, has ordered the closure of Channels TV and also ordered the arrest of the station\u2019s journalists for interviewing Governor Ortom who brought up the story of Buhari Fulanisation agenda, and a guest who revealed that people who are high up in the Buhari government are sponsors of Boko Haram<\/strong>,\u201d a top source revealed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>The government did not refute facts advanced by the guest, Commodore Kunle Olawunmi (retd.), that the government has the names of sponsors linked to the conviction of Boko Haram sponsors in the United Arab Emirates.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cRather than provide a concrete refutation, the government is trying to gag the media by attacking the constitutional rights of the media and the journalist to practice their profession unfettered,\u201d<\/strong> the source added.<\/p>\n<p>Another source familiar with the order stated that the Buhari government had issued a directive to the NBC to sanction Channels TV for airing the two \u201cunpleasant\u201d interviews.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Channels TV license is to be suspended by the Federal Government over the interview of Governor Ortom and retired naval personnel.
