{"id":77236,"date":"2021-09-01T05:55:28","date_gmt":"2021-09-01T04:55:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=77236"},"modified":"2021-09-01T05:59:27","modified_gmt":"2021-09-01T04:59:27","slug":"court-refuses-to-hear-mainas-fresh-bail-application","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/09\/01\/court-refuses-to-hear-mainas-fresh-bail-application\/","title":{"rendered":"Court refuses to hear Maina&#8217;s fresh bail application"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A federal high court sitting in Abuja has refused to hear a fresh bail application filed by former chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), Abdulrasheed Maina.<\/p>\n<p>The judge, Ahmed Mohammed refused to hear the<span class=\"s1\">\u00a0bail application which was moved by David Iorhemba, Maina\u2019s counsel, on grounds that it was contentious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Andrew Ocholi opposed the application, <span class=\"s1\">saying he had filed a counter-affidavit and a preliminary objection to show that Maina was no longer entitled to bail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to NAN, Mohammed, in his ruling, held that the application was contentious and as such could not be heard during the court\u2019s vacation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The judge returned the case to Okon Abang, who has been the trial judge in the substantive case, to hear the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/07\/29\/medical-report-others-delay-igbohos-bail-application\/\">bail application<\/a> after the court\u2019s vacation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Maina was arraigned before Okon Abang on October 25, 2019, by the EFCC, alongside his firm, Common Input Property and Investment Limited, on a 12-count charge of money laundering to the tune of N2 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"caps\"><span class=\"s1\">He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Abang subsequently ordered that Maina be remanded in the correctional centre in Kuje, pending hearing of his bail application.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After perfecting his bail conditions, Maina was released from custody, but had his bail revoked on November 18, 2020 after he jumped bail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Recall that Maina was re-arrested and returned to court after which the court ruled that he be remanded in custody till the end of trial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Following his re-arrest, Francis Oronsaye, Maina\u2019s lawyer, withdrew from the case while his new lawyer, Anayo Adibe, filed another bail application.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Abang, however, in a ruling on February 28, refused to grant the application on the grounds that it was without merit and that Maina failed to place sufficient materials before the court to determine that he deserved another bail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The judge held that Maina did not deserve to be admitted to bail again after violating the conditions of the bail granted him earlier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The matter has been adjourned till October 4, when the court would resume from its vacation.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A federal high court sitting in Abuja has refused to hear a fresh bail application filed by former chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), Abdulrasheed Maina.
