{"id":78213,"date":"2021-09-03T12:20:48","date_gmt":"2021-09-03T11:20:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=78213"},"modified":"2021-09-03T12:20:48","modified_gmt":"2021-09-03T11:20:48","slug":"nigerian-jailed-in-us-for-stealing-from-covid-19-relief-fund","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/09\/03\/nigerian-jailed-in-us-for-stealing-from-covid-19-relief-fund\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigerian jailed in US for stealing from COVID-19 relief fund"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bamidele Muraina, a 35-year-old Nigerian has been convicted in the United States for fraudulent schemes that defrauded individuals, businesses, and the government.<\/p>\n<p>WITHIN NIGERIA gathered that Muraina hacked into tax preparation firms and filed fraudulent unemployment benefit claims, and tax returns using stolen personally identifiable information.<\/p>\n<p>He filed more than 275 fraudulent individual income <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/02\/25\/icpc-secures-final-forfeiture-of-919202-found-with-federal-high-court-staff\/\">tax returns<\/a> using stolen identities to ask for refunds from the IRS exceeding $2.6 million from 2018 through 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The convict also used stolen information to submit false claims for unemployment insurance benefits in Washington.<\/p>\n<p>He exploited a federal COVID-19 pandemic relief program to receive more than $280,000 from the State of Washington over a one-week span in May 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Muraina, a native of Oyo State, recruited one Gabriel Kalembo, a previously convicted fraudster, to launder the fraudulent assets.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The conspirators not only stole from the government but also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/22\/ncc-arrest-5-suspects-over-alleged-fraudulent-registration-of-sim-cards\/\">victimised individuals<\/a> and private businesses in this case,&#8221; IRS Criminal Investigation Special Agent in Charge, James E. Dorsey, said.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. District Judge, William M. Ray II, sentenced Muraina to five years and 10 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.<\/p>\n<p>The convict was also ordered to pay $561,125.62 in restitution.<\/p>\n<p>Kalembo was also sentenced to four years and two months in prison, followed by two years of supervised release, and ordered to pay $298,008.71 in restitution.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bamidele Muraina, a 35-year-old Nigerian has been convicted in the United States for fraudulent schemes that defrauded individuals, businesses, and the government.
