{"id":78705,"date":"2021-09-04T20:05:51","date_gmt":"2021-09-04T19:05:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=78705"},"modified":"2021-09-04T20:05:51","modified_gmt":"2021-09-04T19:05:51","slug":"footballer-dies-during-training-on-the-day-he-was-to-leave-nigeria-for-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/09\/04\/footballer-dies-during-training-on-the-day-he-was-to-leave-nigeria-for-europe\/","title":{"rendered":"Footballer dies during training on the day he was to leave Nigeria for Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>21-year old Nigerian footballer, Okafor Kelechi died while training with his teammates on the same day he was supposed to travel to Azerbaijan, in Eastern Europe where he was to be signed on to kick-start his career professionally.<\/p>\n<p>According to Vanguard, the Anambra-state born was selected alongside two of his football team members to travel to Azerbaijan but his dream came crashing like a pack of cards on August 10, 2021, while he and his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/27\/breaking-ronaldo-jets-out-of-italy-bids-farewell-to-juve-teammates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">teammates<\/a> were practicing on the training ground at Idowu Fadeyi, Ayobo, Ipaja, Lagos.<\/p>\n<p>Kelechi, who played as a right full back, and sometimes as a central midfielder started with Lion heart Football Club domiciled in Ayobo community for three years.<\/p>\n<p>Explaining how the tragedy occurred, one of his teammates, said, \u201cthe incident happened on the very day Kelechi and three others were supposed to travel to Europe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c We had gone for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/31\/qatar-2022-joseph-yobo-confronts-eko-hotel-staff-for-trying-to-stop-the-super-eagles-from-training-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">training<\/a> that day. He went for an aerial battle. On his way down, he lost balance and hit his head on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImmediately, the coaches administered first aid on him, trying to revive him. When it didn\u2019t yield any result, they rushed him to the hospital. The police came to the training ground at Idowu Fadeyi, Ayobo, Ipaja where the incident happened. The policemen questioned some of the players, took photographs before going to the hospital\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got so emotional, I couldn\u2019t control myself as I began to cry when I saw the lifeless body of Kelechi being put inside a body bag. His corpse was deposited at the Yaba morgue \u201c<\/p>\n<p>It was learned that, when Kelechi\u2019s uncle, Chukwudi and his elder brother Uche came to pitch, everybody was in a sober mood.<\/p>\n<p>The club Manager was said to have explained what happened, as well as the efforts of teammates and coaches. Thereafter, the relatives went back to the police station, to see the DPO and inform them that they wanted the case closed since it wasn\u2019t a murder case.<\/p>\n<p>Late Kelechi\u2019s elder brother, Uche lamented that \u201c It\u2019s unfortunate that Kelechi died on the same day he was supposed to travel, his flight ticket had been purchased, the flight was scheduled for 8:45pm and he died before noon. Kelechi is the last born in our family. Our parents are alive and they are devastated by the news.
