{"id":80262,"date":"2021-09-08T19:53:38","date_gmt":"2021-09-08T18:53:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=80262"},"modified":"2021-09-08T19:53:38","modified_gmt":"2021-09-08T18:53:38","slug":"vat-collection-to-begin-before-end-of-september-says-river-govt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/09\/08\/vat-collection-to-begin-before-end-of-september-says-river-govt\/","title":{"rendered":"VAT collection to begin before end of September, says River govt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Rivers state government has told oil companies, banks that the VAT collection will commence in September 2021 and advised them to remit such to the state and not FIRS.<\/p>\n<p>This was disclosed on Wednesday by the governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike at a\u00a0<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">stakeholders\u2019 meeting with oil companies business owners in Port Harcourt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Recall that last month, a <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">high court issued an order restraining the<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Federal Inland Revenue Service (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.firs.gov.ng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>FIRS<\/strong><\/a>) from collecting VAT and Personal Income Tax (PIT) \u2014 directing the Rivers state government to take charge of the collection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, FIRS appealed the judgement<strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and asked taxpayers to continue to pay VAT to the agency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Wike said the state government would inaugurate the tax appeal commission on Friday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe will inaugurate the tax appeal commission by Friday to let you know that we are very serious,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cFrom this September we must collect all our VAT, if you like to play that kind of prank of collecting advice from your head offices, you will also listen for advice from your head offices by the time I seal up your premises.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI will shut them down. I will be happy that in my time, that heaven came down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cRivers state government is fully in charge of this, and we will not hesitate to apply the sanctions under the VAT Law No. 4 of 2021&#8243;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Following the high court judgement, the governor signed a bill on value-added tax <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/09\/07\/firs-speaks-on-vat-judgement-asks-taxpayers-to-maintain-status-quo\/\">(VAT)<\/a> collection into law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Speaking further, Wike said paying VAT to the federal government does not promote development in the state, adding that Rivers generated N15 billion VAT in June 2021 but only got N4.7 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cKano produced N2.8bn in June, but Kano also got N2.8 billion \u2014 sometimes you don\u2019t want to believe these things exist,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIf you want to take the advantage by saying you don\u2019t know who to pay to\u2026it\u2019s a lie because you know.
