{"id":80895,"date":"2021-09-10T15:05:55","date_gmt":"2021-09-10T14:05:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=80895"},"modified":"2021-09-10T15:05:55","modified_gmt":"2021-09-10T14:05:55","slug":"kogi-opposes-lagos-rivers-vat-bills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/09\/10\/kogi-opposes-lagos-rivers-vat-bills\/","title":{"rendered":"Kogi opposes Lagos, Rivers VAT bills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Government of Kogi state has stated that it will not jump on the bandwagon of Lagos and Rivers in the bid to make the collection of value-added tax (VAT) exclusive for states.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that Governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike was the first to\u00a0assent the VAT bill on August 20 \u2014 just 10 days after a federal high court issued an order restraining the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firs.gov.ng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Inland Revenue Service<\/a>(FIRS) from collecting the tax in the state.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, Lagos state house of assembly on Thursday also passed the\u00a0bill after a unanimous vote by the lawmakers, and a copy has been sent to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos governor, for his assent.<\/p>\n<p>The development has generated mixed reactions across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Kogi&#8217;s commissioner for information and communication, Kingsley Fanwo in a chat with Arise TV on Friday said\u00a0despite its \u201cadvantages\u201d, the state opposes the move.<\/p>\n<p>He said \u201cwe are not created equally, and God that created us did not give us equal potential, and we have to support one another\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The commissioner then added, \u201cthis call shows that some of our leaders are insensitive, self-centred and trying to make policies that will further divide the country\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKogi is bordered by about 10 states of the federation and a gateway to the north, south, to everywhere. And you know that thousands of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/16\/suspected-bandits-kill-five-burn-nine-houses-three-vehicles-in-kaduna-village\/\">vehicles<\/a> transverse the state on a daily basis. It\u2019s the mineral capital of Nigeria. When you look at our advantages, we should even be at the forefront of fighting for VAT to be completely retained in the state,\u201d Fanwo said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I think we should take it beyond this when you look at the development of the south-west in those days \u2014 the cocoa house \u2014 and the groundnut pyramids in the north, the whole of Nigeria is reaping the benefit till today. And what we need to do at this material time as leaders is to stop thinking about ourselves alone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe position of governor Yahaya Bello on this is very clear: we will not jump on that bandwagon to call for the retention of VAT completely in the state.
