{"id":81315,"date":"2021-09-11T18:04:52","date_gmt":"2021-09-11T17:04:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=81315"},"modified":"2021-09-11T18:04:52","modified_gmt":"2021-09-11T17:04:52","slug":"rotimi-amaechi-nimasa-not-a-revenue-generating-agency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/09\/11\/rotimi-amaechi-nimasa-not-a-revenue-generating-agency\/","title":{"rendered":"Rotimi Amaechi: NIMASA not a revenue generating agency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi has stated that the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) was not set up as a revenue generating agency.<\/p>\n<p>According to Amaechi,<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the mandate of the agency was to act as a regulator of maritime safety and security.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This was contained in a statement released by the <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ministry\u2019s director of press and public relations,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Eric Ojiekwe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Amaechi said this at the final session of the 5-day National Council on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/31\/masari-bans-transportation-of-cattle-from-katsina-to-other-states\/\">Transportation<\/a> (NCT), held in Kano state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cPeople put NIMASA under pressure that they must make money; make money for what, NIMASA actually is a regulatory authority, not for them to go and look for money,\u201d NAN quoted Amaechi to have said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe people that should be making money and they must hear it now is the Nigeria Ports Authority. It is their responsibility to make money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201dNIMASA should therefore focus on being a regulatory authority on issues of safety and security of our waterways.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On the Dala Inland Dry Port, the minister said the federal government would not commission the project until the concessionaire completes a primary school offering free education to the many out-of-school children in the area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI want NSC to note this because that\u2019s the agreement we had with the concessionaire,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201dShippers\u2019 council can charge whatever you want to charge for the dry port but part of the profit that they make in the dry port will go to the upbringing of those children.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The transportation minister expressed dismay over the inability to convene the NCT for the past three years due to economic downturn and advent of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He expressed optimism that critical decisions bordering on transportation would be addressed at the summit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cTransportation is essential to sustainable development as it enables access to employment, business, education, health services and social interactions,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201dThe prosperity and wellbeing of developing and developed world are inseparably linked to transport.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201dAs such, President Muhammadu Buhari has made issues relating to transportation, one of the topmost priorities of his administration.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi has stated that the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) was not set up as a revenue generating agency.
