{"id":83524,"date":"2021-09-17T19:40:36","date_gmt":"2021-09-17T18:40:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=83524"},"modified":"2021-09-18T02:29:24","modified_gmt":"2021-09-18T01:29:24","slug":"enaira-cbn-to-own-major-stake-in-bitt-inc-says-emefiele","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/09\/17\/enaira-cbn-to-own-major-stake-in-bitt-inc-says-emefiele\/","title":{"rendered":"eNaira: CBN to own major stake in Bitt Inc., says Emefiele"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele has disclosed that the apex monetary authority will own a majority stake in Bitt Inc., its technical partner for digital currency, eNaira.<\/p>\n<p>This was disclosed by Emefiele at the<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0end of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/09\/17\/cbn-to-shut-down-aboki-fx-website-over-exchange-rate-speculation\/\">CBN<\/a> monetary policy committee (MPC) meeting on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The apex bank in July announced that the pilot scheme of e-Naira would kick off on October 1, 2021.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The decision was taken a few months after directing banks and other financial institutions to close accounts of persons or entities involved in cryptocurrency transactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Recall that the CBN<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> had explained that cryptocurrencies pose the risk<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0of loss of investments, money laundering, terrorism financing, illicit fund flows and other criminal activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Emefiele said: \u201cWe chose Bitts as a partner\u2026 that they will establish their company in Nigeria, the Central Bank of Nigeria will own a majority stake in that company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAs with all attempts at choosing contractors, the CBN went through a rigorous vendor selection process in line with the Public Procurement Act conducted by seven departmental directors and a deputy governor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cTen companies were evaluated based on the following criteria: technology ownership and control; implementation timeline; efficiency and ease of adoption; support for anti-money laundering and combatting of terrorism; platform security; interoperability; and implementation experience\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He said out of six bidders for the final selection, Bitt emerged first obtaining an average scoring grid of 82.3 percent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The CBN governor further said from the launch of the pilot scheme of Nigeria\u2019s digital currency, anyone interested would be able to access and utilise the resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe have all the approvals and mandates to launch on October 1, but it is important to understand that eNaira is not a one-off, it\u2019s a journey that starts on October 1.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cFrom October 1, a Nigerian will be able to download the eNaira app from either Google Play Store or App Store, fund their eNaira wallet using their bank accounts or with cash at a registered agent, location.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThey will conduct transactions such as transfers and purchases at merchant outlets that have onboarded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe are not going to pretend that there are no risks in opening our system up.
