{"id":85321,"date":"2021-09-22T14:10:09","date_gmt":"2021-09-22T13:10:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=85321"},"modified":"2021-09-22T14:12:09","modified_gmt":"2021-09-22T13:12:09","slug":"senate-passes-bill-to-improve-management-of-sickle-cell-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/09\/22\/senate-passes-bill-to-improve-management-of-sickle-cell-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Senate passes bill to improve management of sickle cell disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The upper chamber of the national assembly, senate has passed a bill seeking to improve the management of sickle cell disease in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The bill passed third reading after\u00a0Yahaya Oloriegbe, chairman of the committee on health, presented a report.<\/p>\n<p>According to Oloriegbe,\u00a0Nigeria ranks first in the world as a sickle cell endemic country, and was declared by the World Health Organisation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>WHO)<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in 2006 as the capital of sickle cell disease in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Sickle cell anaemia is a disease and inherited disorder of haemoglobin (SS) from either or both parents of a child.<\/p>\n<p>The disease affects millions of people globally.<\/p>\n<p>According to Oloriegbe, the bill, when passed and assented to, will provide the needed legal framework for the prevention, control and management of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/07\/03\/who-declares-china-malaria-free-after-70-years-of-battling-disease\/\">disease<\/a>, as well as avert early deaths and unnecessary medical expenses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe disease has the potential of affecting Nigeria\u2019s aspiration of attaining goal three \u2014 good health and well-being of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of 2020 \u2014 unless special attention is paid to the prevention and management of the disease,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bill will strengthen existing structure, encourage and strengthen support groups and other groups to be able to assess the effectiveness or otherwise of the control strategies in place to eliminate sickle cell disease.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The upper chamber of the national assembly, senate has passed a bill seeking to improve the management of sickle cell disease in the country.
