{"id":86088,"date":"2021-09-24T15:00:04","date_gmt":"2021-09-24T14:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=86088"},"modified":"2021-09-24T15:01:59","modified_gmt":"2021-09-24T14:01:59","slug":"covid-19-what-nigeria-must-do-to-avoid-falls-in-health-spending-world-bank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/09\/24\/covid-19-what-nigeria-must-do-to-avoid-falls-in-health-spending-world-bank\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19: What Nigeria must do to avoid falls in health spending &#8211; World Bank"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The World Bank has predicted that Nigeria may be unable to finance its share of a COVID-19 vaccine roll-out, invest in better preparedness to protect from future crisis.<\/p>\n<p>This was contained in a report titled: <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> \u2018From Double Shock to Double Recovery: Widening Rifts\u2019 released by the bank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to the bank,<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0governments would have to make bold choices to avoid falls in government health spending and progress toward the World Health Organisation (WHO) <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;source=web&amp;rct=j&amp;url=https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/universal-health-coverage-(uhc)&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjdzvqX_pTzAhU6AWMBHb0SBGYQFnoECAoQAQ&amp;usg=AOvVaw3aUCtxYc2v40b2X1XqRO6h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>universal health coverage<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIn a group of 126 countries, per capita, government spending is projected to exceed pre-COVID levels by 2026. In 52 countries, by that time, overall government spending will, however, remain below 2019 levels,\u201d the report said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cA return to pre-COVID-19 growth rates in per capita government health spending in the poorest of these countries would require the share of spending assigned to health to almost double, from 10 percent to 20 percent. \u201c<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to the report, Nigeria, among other 52 countries are expected to reduce their per capita government spending below pre-COVID levels over the next five years (2021-2026).<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The 52 countries include Afghanistan, Burundi, Liberia, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Sudan, Algeria, Angola, Bolivia, Cameroon, Comoros, Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Eswatini, Kiribati, Lesotho, Micronesia, Nigeria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Others are Papua New Guinea, Sao Tome and Principe, Timor Leste, Vanuatu, Zambia; Belize, Botswana, Costa Rica, Dominica, Ecuador, Fiji, Jordan, Maldives, Mexico, Namibia, South Africa, St. Lucia, Surinam, Turkmenistan, Antigua.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Barbuda, The Bahamas, Bahrain, Iceland, Kuwait, Nauru, New Zealand, Oman, Palau, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, St. Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago, and United Arab Emirates are the remaining countries that may likely reduce their spending capacity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe economic shock from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/09\/22\/makinde-returns-five-former-commissioners-nominates-covid-19-incident-manager\/\">COVID-19<\/a> is threatening the capacity of governments to spend sufficiently on health, threatening COVID-19 recovery and health security for all,\u201d Mamta Murthi, World Bank vice-president for human development, said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cCash-strapped countries will have to make tough choices in health investment to safeguard essential health services, stay on a path toward Universal Health Coverage, and build resilience for the future\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The World Bank advised countries to build resilience by investing in preparedness and ensuring affordable health services for their populations, especially poor people.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The World Bank has predicted that Nigeria may be unable to finance its share of a COVID-19 vaccine roll-out, invest in better preparedness to protect from future crisis.
