{"id":86946,"date":"2021-09-27T14:38:30","date_gmt":"2021-09-27T13:38:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=86946"},"modified":"2021-09-27T14:39:30","modified_gmt":"2021-09-27T13:39:30","slug":"switzerland-votes-to-legalise-same-sex-marriage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/09\/27\/switzerland-votes-to-legalise-same-sex-marriage\/","title":{"rendered":"Switzerland votes to legalise same-sex marriage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Switzerland has agreed to legalise civil marriage and the right to adopt children for same-sex couples by a nearly two-thirds majority in a referendum, making it one of the last countries in Western Europe to legalise gay marriage.<\/p>\n<p>According to results provided by the Swiss federal chancellery, 64.1 percent of voters voted in favour of same-sex marriage in Sunday\u2019s nationwide referendum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a historic day for Switzerland, a historic day when it comes to equality for same-sex couples, and it is also an important day for the whole LGBT community,\u201d said Jan Muller of the \u201cyes\u201d campaign committee.<\/p>\n<p>Switzerland is the world\u2019s 30th country to adopt same-sex marriages, and one of the last remaining western European nations to do so. The Netherlands was the first in 2001.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very happy and relieved,\u201d said Antonia Hauswirth of the national committee \u201cMarriage for All\u201d, adding supporters would celebrate in Switzerland\u2019s capital Bern on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Justice minister Karin Keller-Sutter said the first same-sex marriages should be able to take place from July 1 next year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhoever loves each other and wants to get married will be able to do so, regardless of whether it is two men, two women, or a man and a woman,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe state does not have to tell citizens how they should lead their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty International welcomed the move as a \u201cmilestone for equality\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>While same-sex couples can register a civil partnership, with about 700 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/03\/15\/pope-orders-catholic-priests-to-desist-from-blessing-same-sex-marriages\/\">established<\/a> each year, the arrangement does not provide the same rights as marriage, including for obtaining citizenship and the joint adoption of children.<\/p>\n<p>The amended law will make it possible for same-sex couples to get married in civil ceremonies, and adopt children. Married lesbian couples will also have access to sperm donation, in what was one of the more controversial aspects of the referendum campaign.<\/p>\n<p>50,000 signatures needed to put the issue to a referendum under Switzerland\u2019s system of direct democracy was gathered after the Swiss parliament approved a bill last December allowing same-sex couples to marry.<\/p>\n<p>Monika Rueegger of the right-wing Swiss People\u2019s Party (SVP) and member of the referendum committee \u201cNo to Marriage for All\u201d said she was disappointed at the outcome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was not about love and feelings, it was about children\u2019s welfare.
