Obumneme, son of the murdered Dr. Chike Akunyili has narrated how his father was killed by yet-to-be-identified gunmen on Tuesday night in Anambra.<\/p>\n

WITHIN NIGERIA had earlier reported that\u00a0unknown gunmen reportedly killed Dr Chike Akunyili<\/a>\u00a0at Umuoji in Idemili North LGA of Anambra State on Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n

The medical was killed while returning from a commemorative lecture in honour of his late wife, former Minister of Information, Prof. Dora Akunyili<\/p>\n

Speaking with the BBC Igbo, Obumneme said that his father was shot in the face by gunmen<\/a> who opened fire on his vehicle at Nkpor, Anambra State.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis driver and a Police officer assigned to him also died in the shooting<\/a>. A cousin survived and is being treated in hospital,\u201d Obumneme added.<\/p>\n

They were driving back from the town of Nsukka in Enugu state after attending a lecture hosted by the University of Nigeria to pay tribute to the late NAFDAC DG, Dora.<\/p>\n

In other news, Anambra Governor Willie Obiano has placed an N20 million bounty on the killers of Dr Chike Akunyili and nine others.<\/p>\n

He announced during his state-wide broadcast after the harvest of killings in the state by gunmen.<\/p>\n

He said security operatives should step up their security network, adding that his administration would no longer tolerate further killings.<\/p>\n

He said no fewer than 10 persons were killed by the gunmen<\/a>, including one of the influential sons of the State, Dr Chike Akunyili<\/p>\n

According to him: \u201cTo reinforce our commitment and seriousness on this issue, I on behalf of the State Government, wish to announce a N20,000,000 reward for any useful information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators of these heinous attacks on our state. The people behind this must be unmasked and brought to book.<\/p>\n

\u201cI urge citizens to report to us anybody bearing firearm who is not a security or vigilante personnel, so we can deal with this monster, once and for all.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish to most heartily condole with the families of all those who have lost their loved ones in the course of these senseless attacks.<\/p>\n

\u201cI promise you that we will leave no stone unturned in getting justice for them. May their souls rest in peace.<\/p>\n

\u201cFinally, I urge all citizens of the state to unite in this fight against all forms of terror, intimidation and tyranny.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will not succumb to invaders as I am convinced that no Anambra son will indulge in this kind of heartlessness.<\/p>\n

\u201cI warn all those promoting and participating in these violent attacks to leave our state or pay a high price as we will definitely catch up with them.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince last weekend, some armed persons have unleashed terror with sporadic attacks on innocent citizens in various parts of the State.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the briefings I have received from Security Commanders, Offices of some political parties, branded campaign vehicles and individuals occupying them have been attacked with killings and burning of vehicles observed.<\/p>\n

\u201cOther innocent road users have become victims of this menace with many losing their lives and others, their properties.<\/p>\n

\u201cBetween Sunday 26th and yesterday 28th September, 2021 attacks on citizens at Oko, Agulu, Obosi, Nkpor, Nnobi, Nnewi and other places have left about 10 people dead including an illustrious son of this State, Dr Chike Akunyili, husband of late Prof Dora Akunyili who was reportedly gunned down yesterday around Nkpor.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese attacks and accompanying deaths cannot be justified and must stop now.<\/p>\n
