{"id":87963,"date":"2021-09-30T08:23:16","date_gmt":"2021-09-30T07:23:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=87963"},"modified":"2021-09-30T08:23:16","modified_gmt":"2021-09-30T07:23:16","slug":"you-need-to-give-attention-to-tax-matters-firs-tells-state-assemblies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/09\/30\/you-need-to-give-attention-to-tax-matters-firs-tells-state-assemblies\/","title":{"rendered":"You need to give attention to tax matters, FIRS tells state assemblies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Executive chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Muhammad Nami has called on state assemblies to give greater attention to tax matters.<\/p>\n<p>The FIRS boss admonished governments at all tiers<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0to ensure that tax-compliant citizens enjoy the value for the taxes they pay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This was stated by Nami in his goodwill message to the<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Nigeria Governors\u2019 Forum\u2019s 7th Internally Generated Revenue Learning Event in Abuja on Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">While calling for greater attention to tax-related matters, Nami said it is surprising that \u201cno legislative assemblies have a tax committee\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cYour Excellencies and Honourable Ministers, 22 years since Nigeria started this democratic dispensation, none of our legislative assemblies has a tax committee; it is surprising,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe must see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/09\/09\/states-collecting-vat-will-lead-to-double-taxation-for-businesses-says-firs\/\">taxation<\/a> in its proper context such that all arms of government (legislative, executive and judiciary) should accord it due attention.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He also said that tax-compliant citizens legitimately expect their leaders to provide them with necessary amenities for good living.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cTax compliant citizens can legitimately expect their leaders to provide necessary amenities for a \u2018good life\u2019,\u201d Nami said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis expectation is confirmed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) in section 16(b) where it provides that \u2018the State shall, within the context of the ideals and objectives for which provisions are made in this Constitution, control the national economy in such manner as to secure the maximum welfare, freedom and happiness of every citizen on the basis of social justice and equality of status and opportunity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cGovernments at various tiers must, in view of the constitutional provisions, imbibe the culture of \u201cvalue-for-money\u201d or, put in proper perspective, \u201cvalue-for tax-money\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe citizens should not just hear budget figures but must, within their immediate living quarters, feel, see and experience effects of tax revenue. This, going forward, should be the norm and not an exception.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The FIRS chairman also encouraged state governors to look inwards and create alternative sources of revenue away from depending on revenue from oil sources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour Excellencies, Nigeria, over the years, has been dependent on revenue from crude oil. This source of revenue is no longer sustainable as the market for fossil fuel continues to deplete due to complications arising from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the shift from fossil fuel to other cleaner sources of energy, rising cost of exploration, banditry and oil theft, etc,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn plain truth, the future of crude oil as a major revenue earner is very bleak. Going forward, taxation remains the only sustainable source of revenue anywhere in the world \u2014 Nigeria is not an exception.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo this end, Your Excellencies need to adopt right tax policies that will ensure adequate funding for the much needed social-economic infrastructures.
