{"id":87984,"date":"2021-09-30T09:16:53","date_gmt":"2021-09-30T08:16:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=87984"},"modified":"2021-09-30T09:16:53","modified_gmt":"2021-09-30T08:16:53","slug":"comply-with-tax-obligations-governors-tell-informal-sector-players","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/09\/30\/comply-with-tax-obligations-governors-tell-informal-sector-players\/","title":{"rendered":"Comply with tax obligations, Governors tell informal sector players"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigeria Governors&#8217; Forum (NGF) has called om entrepreneurs in the informal sector and workers to comply with all relevant tax obligations in the country.<\/p>\n<p>This call was made by the governor of Ekiti state, Kayode Fayemi at the<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a07th NGF internally generated revenue (IGR) learning event in Abuja.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to Fayemi,<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the marginal growth in the IGR of states recorded a decline of N43.15 billion in 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAlthough the COVID-19 pandemic contributed strongly to the decline recorded, our tax effort (tax-to-GDP) as states is estimated to be less than 3 percent,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAdvancing beyond our current revenue levels will warrant more systemic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/26\/there-will-be-no-true-democracy-without-electoral-reforms-says-buba-galadima\/\">reforms<\/a> to address low tax morale and voluntary compliance by taxpayers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe growing wave in tax avoidance and evasion, especially among the informal sector, is not unconnected with their belief that such cognitive dissonance is right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cSuch justification is often predicated on the principle of reciprocity and economic exchange for which they fault the government\u2019s commitment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThus, where these incalcitrant taxpayers perceive a weak social contract, they call to question the legitimacy of taxes imposed on them by the law.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Fayemi, who also doubles as the NGF chairman, said taxes gotten from businesses and individuals will not only be used for social infrastructure but also for health financing initiatives for Nigerians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThis redistributive measure, tax-for-service, is intended to bring about additional funding for healthcare, improve service delivery, promote trust in government and strengthen the legitimacy for taxes collected,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In his remarks, Muhammad Nami, executive chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), explained that tax payments are the \u201cprice paid in anticipation of decent living conditions\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He asked subnational governments to adopt the right tax policies that will ensure adequate funding for social-economic infrastructures.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigeria Governors&#8217; Forum (NGF) has called om entrepreneurs in the informal sector and workers to comply with all relevant tax obligations in the country.
