{"id":89816,"date":"2021-10-05T15:47:50","date_gmt":"2021-10-05T14:47:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=89816"},"modified":"2021-10-05T15:47:50","modified_gmt":"2021-10-05T14:47:50","slug":"uk-to-roll-out-revolutionary-new-treatment-for-sickle-cell-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/10\/05\/uk-to-roll-out-revolutionary-new-treatment-for-sickle-cell-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"UK to roll out \u2018revolutionary\u2019 new treatment for sickle cell disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Report has revealed that a new treatment for sickle cell disease has been developed and will soon be offered to patients in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">According to the UK National Health Service (NHS), the treatment is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/2021\/10\/nhs-announces-deal-for-life-changing-sickle-cell-treatment\/\"><strong>first one<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>developed in over 20 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Sickle cell disease, mostly common among Africans and Caribbeans, is a disease that causes the red blood cells to become hard, sticky and take a crescent shape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">When the cells travel through small blood vessels, they get stuck and clog the blood flow which causes pain. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/09\/22\/senate-passes-bill-to-improve-management-of-sickle-cell-disease\/\">sickle cells<\/a> also die early, which causes a constant shortage of red blood cells.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">People with the condition endure severe pain called a \u2018sickle cell crisis\u2019 that can occur multiple times per year, which often require hospital visits or admission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The new drug, known as Crizanlizumab, made by Novartis, is injected into the vein and can be taken alone or alongside standard treatment and regular blood transfusions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">It works by binding to a protein in the blood cells to prevent the restriction of blood and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/12\/lagos-releases-fresh-list-of-covid-19-sample-collection-oxygen-treatment-centres-full-list\/\">oxygen<\/a> supply that lead to a sickle cell crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The NHS said the drug will reduce the number of times a sickle cell patient needs to go to accident and emergency (A&amp;E) by \u201ctwo fifths\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">People aged 16 and over who suffer from multiple sickle cell crises per year will be eligible for the treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">UK\u2019s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), which\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/news\/article\/nice-recommends-first-treatment-in-two-decades-for-sickle-cell-disease\"><strong>recommended<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0the drug be available on the NHS, said it could not recommend the drug for routine use yet owing to high uncertainty about the long-term effectiveness of the treatment and its associated costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">But the agreement with the NHS will allow patients to access the drug while extra data is collected through clinical trials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Amanda Pritchard, chief executive of NHS England, said the drug will help as many as 5,000 people over the next three years to have a much better quality of life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis is a historic moment for people with sickle cell disease who will be given their first new treatment in over two decades,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis revolutionary treatment will help to save lives, allow patients to have a better quality of life and reduce trips to A&amp;E by almost half.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Report has revealed that a new treatment for sickle cell disease has been developed and will soon be offered to patients in the United Kingdom.
