{"id":90375,"date":"2021-10-07T05:21:07","date_gmt":"2021-10-07T04:21:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=90375"},"modified":"2021-10-07T05:32:49","modified_gmt":"2021-10-07T04:32:49","slug":"fg-will-borrow-to-fund-n6-25trn-deficit-in-2022-budget-zainab-ahmed-discloses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/10\/07\/fg-will-borrow-to-fund-n6-25trn-deficit-in-2022-budget-zainab-ahmed-discloses\/","title":{"rendered":"FG will borrow to fund N6.25trn deficit in 2022 budget, Zainab Ahmed discloses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Minister of finance, budget and national planning, Zainab Ahmed has disclosed that the federal government will borrow to finance N6.258 trillion deficit in the 2022 budget.<\/p>\n<p>This was disclosed by the minister of finance, budget and national planning, Zainab Ahmed while<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0briefing state house correspondents on the details of the 2022 budget proposal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The finance minister argued that the government is borrowing to provide developmental projects \u2014 roads, rails, bridges, power and water for sustainable development in this country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>She said the government would finance the N6.258 trillion deficit by new borrowings of N5.012 trillion (of which domestic \u2014 N2.506 trillion and foreign \u2014 N2.506 trillion) from project-tied multilateral\/bilateral loans \u2014 N1.156 trillion and privatization proceeds of N90.73 billion.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIf we just depend on the revenues that we get, even though our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/09\/21\/fg-should-encourage-states-to-harness-resources-revenues-for-development-wike\/\">revenues<\/a> have increased, the operational expenditure of government, including salaries and other overheads, is barely covered or swallowed up by the revenue,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cSo, we need to borrow to be able to build these projects that will ensure that we\u2019re able to develop on a sustainable basis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cNigeria\u2019s borrowing has been of great concern and has elicited a lot of discussions. But if you look at the total size of the borrowing, it is still within healthy and sustainable limits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAs at July 2021, the total borrowing is 23 percent of GDP. When you compare it to other countries, we are the lowest within the region, lowest compared to Egypt, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico, and Angola.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe do have a problem with revenue. Our revenues have been increasing. We just reported to the council that our revenues from non-oil have performed (as at July) at the rate of 111 percent, which means outperforming the prorated budget.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cBut our expenditure, especially staff emoluments have been increasing at a very fast rate making it difficult to cope with funding of government.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cSo, what we have to do is a combination of cutting down our cost, as well as increasing revenue to be able to cope with all that is required for the government to do, including salaries, pensions debt service, as well as capital expenditure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to present the budget to the national assembly on Thursday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Minister of finance, budget and national planning, Zainab Ahmed has disclosed that the federal government will borrow to finance N6.258 trillion deficit in the 2022 budget.
