{"id":91270,"date":"2021-10-09T07:36:01","date_gmt":"2021-10-09T06:36:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=91270"},"modified":"2021-10-09T07:36:01","modified_gmt":"2021-10-09T06:36:01","slug":"unicef-nigeria-needs-improved-infrastructure-to-accommodate-malaria-vaccine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/10\/09\/unicef-nigeria-needs-improved-infrastructure-to-accommodate-malaria-vaccine\/","title":{"rendered":"UNICEF: Nigeria needs improved infrastructure to accommodate malaria vaccine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The United Nations Children&#8217;s Fund (UNICEF) has stated that Nigeria needs to improve its health infrastructure to ensure quality administration of the malaria vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>This was stated on Friday by UNICEF representative, Peter Hawkins\u00a0during an interview with NAN in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that the World Health Organisation (WHO) had on Wednesday recommended widespread administration of the\u00a0RTS, S\/AS01 (RTS, S) malaria vaccine to children in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>According to the WHO\u2019s recommendations, the vaccine is effective in the\u00a0prevention of \u201cP. falciparum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/09\/216-nigerians-die-of-malaria-daily-fg\/\">malaria<\/a> in children living in regions with moderate to high transmission\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Hawkins said although the vaccine will not be immediately available in Nigeria, the federal government needs to commit adequate resources to build on the available infrastructure for administering the vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWHO\u2019s recommendation is very good news, but it will take some time before the vaccines are available publicly. The immunisation structure in Nigeria is still evolving and it is a very robust structure,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is routine immunisation for children under five years. There are vaccines for polio, measles, pneumococcal disease, and the COVID-19 vaccines; the next one will be a vaccine for malaria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the next two to three years, we need to build the infrastructure further so that it can accommodate the malaria vaccine, flu vaccine, and other vaccines that are coming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe key issue will be the cost, the call chain, the distribution system. The cost of the vaccine will be the fundamental decider for a country with high malaria burden as Nigeria to push this forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that Nigeria will agree to use the vaccine and in time, see how it can accommodate it in the whole immunisation programme.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the diseases facing children are preventable.
