{"id":92139,"date":"2021-10-11T18:19:29","date_gmt":"2021-10-11T17:19:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=92139"},"modified":"2021-10-11T18:19:29","modified_gmt":"2021-10-11T17:19:29","slug":"nigeria-must-decisively-tackle-its-debt-challenges-says-akinwumi-adesina","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/10\/11\/nigeria-must-decisively-tackle-its-debt-challenges-says-akinwumi-adesina\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria must decisively tackle its debt challenges, says Akinwumi Adesina"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Akinwumi Adesina has stated that Nigeria must &#8220;decisively&#8221; resolve its debt challenges to ignite economic growth.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that the Debt Management Office (DMO) in September said<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Nigeria\u2019s total public debt (federal and state governments) climbed to\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">N35.46 trillion at the end of the second quarter of 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Adesina while speaking on Monday in Abuja at the opening of a two-day mid-term ministerial performance review retreat said Nigeria\u2019s debt service to revenue ratio is high.<\/p>\n<p>The AfDB president, however, acknowledged that the debt-to-GDP ratio remains \u201cmoderate\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Adesina said economic resurgence is possible when Nigeria removes \u201cstructural bottlenecks\u201d that limit the revenue-earning potential of non-oil sectors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNigeria must decisively tackle its debt challenges. The issue is not about the debt-to-GDP ratio, as Nigeria\u2019s debt-to-GDP ratio at 35% is still moderate. The big issue is how to service the debt and what that means for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/09\/21\/fg-should-encourage-states-to-harness-resources-revenues-for-development-wike\/\">resources<\/a> for domestic investments needed to spur faster economic growth,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe debt service to revenue ratio of Nigeria is high at 73%. Things will improve as oil prices recover, but the situation has revealed the vulnerability of Nigeria\u2019s economy. To have an economic resurgence, we need to fix the structure of the economy and address some fundamentals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNigeria\u2019s challenge is revenue concentration, as the oil sector accounts for 75.4 % of export revenue and 50 % of all government revenue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is needed for sustained growth and economic resurgence is to remove the structural bottlenecks that limit the productivity and the revenue earning potential of the huge non-oil sectors.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Akinwumi Adesina has stated that Nigeria must &#8220;decisively&#8221; resolve its debt challenges to ignite economic growth.
