{"id":92173,"date":"2021-10-11T19:54:20","date_gmt":"2021-10-11T18:54:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=92173"},"modified":"2021-10-11T19:54:20","modified_gmt":"2021-10-11T18:54:20","slug":"asset-declaration-were-not-witch-hunting-but-sanitising-banking-sector-says-efcc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/10\/11\/asset-declaration-were-not-witch-hunting-but-sanitising-banking-sector-says-efcc\/","title":{"rendered":"Asset declaration: We\u2019re not witch-hunting but sanitising banking sector, says EFCC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has disclosed that its directive to bankers to declare their assets is aimed at sanitising the bank sector.<\/p>\n<p>This was stated on Monday by EFCC chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa at the opening of a two-day capacity-building workshop for security agencies in Abeokuta, Ogun state capital.<\/p>\n<p>The EFCC had, in March, directed all bank executives to declare their assets latest by June 1.<\/p>\n<p>Represented by Mohammed Ghali, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/10\/09\/efcc-arrests-ten-suspected-internet-fraudsters-in-abuja\/\">EFCC<\/a> Lagos zonal commander, Bawa said a clarification became necessary because many people had misconstrued the measure for a \u201cwitch hunt\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnowing the rots that permeate the nation\u2019s banking sector, the directive was born out of efforts to sanitise the banking sector, but it was received with mixed feeling,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is obvious that those who kicked or are still kicking against the directive are ignorant of the unmistakable details of the bank employees declaration of assets act.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnlike the claims in some quarters, it is not a witch-hunt; rather, it is part of measures to sanitise the country\u2019s financial institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bawa said in carrying out the responsibility of ridding Nigeria of corruption, as mandated by the EFCC establishment act, he had realised that \u201cthere is a slew of corrupt practices going on in the banking sector\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the situation had prompted the EFCC, under his watch, to intensify engagement with bank executives, more than ever before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are aware of the different shades of fraudulent activities going on in our financial institutions, particularly in the banking industry sector,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe nation cannot afford to go through another serious crisis in the banking sector, and this explains the constant intervention by the EFCC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He assured that the anti-graft agency, through its bank fraud section, would continue to prevent fraudulent practices in the banking sector and prosecute perpetrators of such fraud.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has disclosed that its directive to bankers to declare their assets is aimed at sanitising the bank sector.
